Who knew - today is Everest Day, International UN Peacekeepers Day (woo-hoo, I was one once!) and also WORLD OTTER DAY! 🌞🌞🌞 Below a clip of the smooth-coated otters of Asia, specifically, those living in Singapore! Worth watching - pretty nifty how they stick together and tell dogs who's boss in town. Thanks One Earth for the insights shared below: 🐾 The smooth-coated otter is among the larger otters and weighs as much as eleven kilograms 🐾They're highly social (as you see in the clip) and form tight-knit family groups. 🐾They're excellent hunters, working together by swimming in V-shaped lines to span the width of creeks, thus catching more prey. 🐾They're crucial for ecosystem balance as they help regulate fish and crustacean populations, which also influences distribution of plants. 🐾They hold a special place in Indigenous peoples' cultural and mythological traditions. Revered for their playful nature and cunning intelligence, they feature prominently in legends and folklore. In some cultures, they are seen as symbols of luck and prosperity, while in others, they are associated with wisdom and adaptability. The Race to the South Pole: A Tale of Courage and Comradeship. In the heart of our planet lies a frozen giant, Antarctica: a land of immense beauty and unforgiving challenges. Seven times larger than its northern counterpart, the Arctic, Antarctica has been one of the last frontiers to be explored. 1770: Captain James Cook embarks on a daring voyage, marking the beginning of humankind's quest to conquer this icy wilderness. Subsequent expeditions followed, each driven by an unwavering determination to reach the South Pole: the ultimate prize in this polar adventure! The journeys were fraught with peril. The explorers faced relentless cold, treacherous terrain, and limited resources. Yet, they persevered, fueled by an indomitable spirit and a deep bond of camaraderie. With every step, they forged unbreakable bonds of friendship, relying on each other's support and unwavering loyalty to overcome the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that lay in their path. Their courage and selflessness were testaments to the power of human connection, demonstrating that even in the face of extreme adversity, the bonds of friendship and compassion could provide the strength to conquer the most formidable challenges. This is just the beginning of the story to see who will win the race to the South Pole. But let me save that story for another day, my friend. #challenge #adventure #teamwork #exploration #spirit #storytelling

I have been interviewed a number of times over the years. In the next few weeks, then, I’d like to share with you some of the more interesting Q&As. Question n. 3 You first visited Antarctica in 1997, and you say you fell in love with it immediately. What is you find so enchanting about the region? Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest continent in the world. I always think of Antarctica as a planet on our planet. It looks as if everything stopped at the time of creation. Everything is in harmony, pristine and pure, probably because no humans ever colonized this continent. It’s one of the few places on Earth where animals are not scared of us, where penguins approach you to interact, where seals want to play with you and birds don’t fly away. Antarctica is my magic pill for regenerating and rejuvenating! I tried many times to understand this irresistible attraction to the Polar Regions, which I would define almost as an addiction or obsession. These extreme adventures transport me out of my ordinary world and lead me in a voyage of self-discovery. The isolation from the modern civilization and all the distractions that comes with it allow me to focus on Nature’s simple rhythms. The healing feelings of rediscovery our primordial connection with Nature and the interconnectivity between all species on Earth, inspires in me a feeling of awareness and deep respect for the importance of these delicate ecosystems. Constructed by millions of workers under harsh conditions, many sections were built during the Qin and Ming Dynasties. Today, parts of the wall, such as those near Beijing, attract tourists, and it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Preservation efforts continue due to erosion and tourism impacts.
