Philanthropy has a critical role to play in improving the outcomes for all birthing people.
With initial support from the Pritzker Children's Initiative, Cambia Health Foundation, and Community Health Acceleration Partnership (CHAP), the State of Birth Equity: Catalyzing Place Based Philanthropy project is working to spur philanthropic action in states to accelerate birth equity.
States are well positioned to:
▶ coordinate efforts across the health and social service systems to increase access to quality birthing services,
▶ prioritize racial equity,
▶ expand Medicaid reimbursement policies,
▶ and support community-rooted individuals and groups who advocate for and provide services to birthing people.
We invite national and local funders to help steer this urgent mission, shining the spotlight on state-level actions that can create the conditions for optimal, healthy birth outcomes. Through coordinated efforts and supportive, trust-based partnerships, philanthropic resources can unlock opportunities to shift broader systems and dramatically impact outcomes.

Yesterday I had the opportunity, in my role as a Program Officer at Global Foundation for Girls, to present at the Funders for Birth Justice and Equity 2024 Birth Equity Funders Summit.
The topic: Unlocking Potential in Birth Justice Funding: Why BIPOC-Led Funding Intermediaries are a Critical Resource to Achieve Racial and Socioeconomic Equity in Philanthropic Giving.
At a time when all aspects of philanthropic practice are being reexamined through the lens of racial equity and social justice, funders are undertaking a fresh look at funding intermediaries as a potentially integral component of strategy. Intermediaries connect funders to grassroots organizations and causes which they otherwise would have unlimited reach or knowledge.
In 2019, over 47% of organizations-led by people of color were the greatest benefactors of giving from funding intermediaries, according to the Mid-South Philanthropy Network’s Racial Equity Audit. Beyond serving as a critical source of funding, intermediaries are a necessary resource to help narrow the current disparities that exist for BIPOC-led organizations in the areas of capacity building, technical assistance, administrative services, and strategic development.
Participants were provided insights into maximizing impact and dismantling systemic barriers by learning about the nimble and innovative approaches intermediaries employ to support grassroots birth equity initiatives.

Thank you to Kirsty and Robbie for the lovely feedback about our Little Box of Hope support packs - it is great to hear how helpful you found it for the whole family. Our volunteers absolutely love hearing feedback from families.
Our FREE support and information packs are called "A Little Box of Hope" and are available to those in the UK with a diagnosis of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA).
We have two versions - One has been developed for children under the age of 10 and one is aimed at those aged 10 and over. It is the same form to complete and our volunteers will send out the box for the relevant age group.
Our Little Box of Hope packs were the idea of Abbie. When she was just 7 years old, she wanted to help other children with JIA and the idea of A Little Box of Hope was born.
Abbie helped to develop the packs and they were then rolled out as a trial to ensure that they met the needs of children and families affected by JIA. For older children, the 'teen' pack version was then developed to ensure that resources were more age-appropriate for them.
Young children receive a free copy of the Kipo storybook in their pack, whilst older children receive a free copy of Peg-leg written by a young person with JIA in the style of 'diary of a wimpy kid'.
Both packs contain a copy of our "My JIA" booklet as well as lots of other helpful information and resources to help you on your JIA journey.
If you need any extra copies of the information or publications, digital copies of Kipo, Peg-Leg and My JIA can be found on our website along with lots more information for families affected by JIA.
These much-needed packs are only made possibly by your generous donations and fundraising support. Thank you to every person who has supported us to make these support packs a possibility!
A Little Box of Hope can be requested at www.jarproject.org/hope (we can post to UK addresses only)

One month out from Strides 4 CMV Minnesota!
We hope you can join Jackson’s team or donate to help us make it to our goal!
Strides 4 CMV isn’t your average 5k – it’s a celebration! Run, walk, or roll your way through the course, then stick around for some entertainment. Now, let’s talk about why we’re doing this. Congenital CMV (cCMV) might not be a household name, but it’s a big deal. It’s the leading non-genetic cause of childhood hearing loss and disabilities, yet awareness remains shockingly low. By showing up for Strides 4 CMV, you’re helping spread the word, provide support, and share vital prevention info to kick cCMV to the curb!

We all know that it takes a village to support our youth and young adults to be the best that they can be. Raising Expectations empowers youth in crises by elevating academic, social and civic expectations to facilitate high school graduation and post-secondary plans.
Serving multiple counties throughout the Atlanta metro area, and surrounding counties, The Center for Children & Young Adults provides a home for youth who have been abused, neglected, and/or abandoned by their caregivers. Their three-building campus offers four residential programs in a dormitory setting for up to 42 youth at one time in need of shelter, treatment, care and guidance.
Last but certainly not least is the Jack and Jill Foundation. Their mission is to invest in programs and services that create a strong foundation for children to thrive long-term. The Foundation believes that every child deserves access to quality education, healthcare, and a safe and nurturing environment. One of their signature programs is the GAP Fund which currently spans 30 of the 107 HBCUs, providing financial gifts—not scholarships—ranging from $250 to $2000 to eligible graduating seniors based on need. This program has helped increase the graduation rates at participating HBCUs by helping to eliminate financial barriers.

Insightful guidance and compassion for the grieving to find a safe space for healing - without expectation - and for those surrounding the bereaved to learn how to gently handle broken hearts.
March is Trisomy Awareness Month
Children with a Trisomy 13 or Trisomy 18 diagnosis are often viewed by the medical field as "incompatible with life" and not worth fighting for. Many medical facilities will not provide any form of intervention for these children. And will not refer families to doctors that may have more expertise on the diagnosis and life saving measures.
At On Angels' Wings, we believe in giving families all of the information about all of the options for their child. Whatever decision fully informed parents make, we will respect and support them through it. But all too often we've seen families be told there are no options, only to find out after they've lost the child they would fight for that intervention could have happened. Giving families no choice due to lack of information is not acceptable.
Children with Trisomy 13 and Trisomy 18 ARE compatible with life, and they deserve a chance if it is medically possible and what the family wants to do. OAW will continue to advocate for these children that we believe are worth celebrating, and worth fighting for!
