The Thirty-One Hour Shift During my last plant manager job, I would arrive at the manufacturing plant by 7:00 AM. As one day began, it seemed like most others. We were dealing with the typical absenteeism issues and the various maintenance problems we would see at the start of the shift. Then, the call came from an angry customer to let us know they were experiencing a quality issue that would shut down their OEM customer’s operation. A day of fighting various small fires became a five-alarm one of an all-hands-on-deck response. As we assessed the concern, it became necessary to revise our manufacturing process. It required reworking a fixture and adding a welding process. The work began in the early afternoon and went through the night. By mid-morning the next day, we had the revised process in place and ready for review by the customer. Thankfully, the customer approved the change, and we were back in full production by mid-afternoon. After watching it for a couple of hours to ensure that things were working as expected, I left the plant thirty-one hours after arriving the previous day. Potentially surprising to some people, it was one of my favorite memories of my time in manufacturing. In part because resolving the issue in a compressed time frame was a significant challenge. Our team fully embraced resolving the concern in a tight time frame. Some people wilt under pressure, but our group rose to the occasion. One employee commented that it was easy to do so since I kept a calm sense of being for them as they urgently addressed the quality problem. Furthermore, a badge of honor comes from doing what many others could not accomplish when working for thirty-one hours straight. Seems obvious but how many employers do this regular intervals or even ever? If your employee will ever have to drive in connection with their job, a regular licence check is a legal necessity, stipulated by Section 87 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and the Corporate Manslaughter Act 2007. It is the employer’s responsibility to know that an employee is qualified to drive a specific class of vehicle - official guidance says you should check during recruitment, and then at regular intervals.
🪪Driving Licence checks – how often do you check your drivers? https://lnkd.in/eGiX6NH4 ⚠️Managing road risk starts with checking that your drivers are qualified for the vehicle they are using. It might be seem obvious. After all, most recruitment processes involve all kinds of checks – does the person have the necessary skills, qualifications, references required for the role? Unless the candidate is a vocational driver, or driving is a central part of the role, checking their driving licence is easily overlooked. 👉Fact: if your employee will ever have to drive in connection with their job, a regular licence check is a legal necessity, stipulated by Section 87 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and the Corporate Manslaughter Act 2007. During my nearly year-long tenure at Metro Medical Supplies, I've consistently noticed a significant sign in the back of the shop, a hub for many of our business operations. Despite its prominent position, it's intriguing that I've never heard anyone—managers or drivers—mention or quote it. However, I've observed and understood its significance. The individuals in the picture are our shop managers and the architects of our operations. Their responsibilities span a wide range, from managing stock and order routing for drivers to overseeing driver performance, truck management, cleaning technician oversight, and a baker's dozen other things I am unaware of. While it may appear chaotic due to the daily challenges, this logistical masterpiece is a testament to their leadership and dedication. The following are my observations of "taking care of customers" from our managers: Continued training for employees | Identifying strengths and weaknesses | Delegation | Ensuring drivers and shop workers understand equipment | Majoring in the majors and minoring in the minors | Checking equipment before it goes out | Cleaning equipment for a rush order (or cleaning again in case something wasn't up to expectation) | Giving grace to a worker to help better them | Holding to standards when it would be easier to overlook them | Taking interest in worker's lives | Laughing...a lot of laughing | Holding to who they are Taking care of and investing in employees can lead to better customer care. Years of experience in leadership have taught me that this is a delicate balance of caring for AND leading those who work for and around you. It can't just be loving/caring for others and being a "friend"—And it can't just be driving results. How do you drive mission engagement? #onmission #missionengagement #CustomerCare #EmployeeEngagement #leadership #discipleship

Recently, I was able to do a ride-a-long with @William Belk. It’s was an amazing experience as I watched him interact with his clients. It was obvious that Will has been providing QDS quality service to them. My experience led me to a few lessons: 1. The importance of walking a mile in somebody else’s shoe. As an HR Manager I gained valuable insight into our Field Service Technician’s daily job - insight I could only gain by actually doing some of their job. 2. The importance of allowing employees to make minor mistakes so they can learn from them. I failed to put a band back around one of the wheels (Forgive me for wrongful terminaligy) This led to me having to disassemble the machine again to put the missing band on. (Actually Will did it for me. He was a gracious and patient teacher.) The “pain of the minor mistake” made me remember to check those bands going forward! 3. The importance of allowing someone to do something their way as long as it gets the same results in the same amount of time. As I was allowed to to work on the machines with a little less supervision 😏, I changed the order of the way I disassembled the machine. Will not only gave me that freedom to choose how I did it, he also asked why I chose to do it the way that I did. Good leaders allow employees to choose their individual way as long as it produces that same results within the same reasonable time. They are also willing to learn from their direct reports. It shouldn’t be “my way of the highway” with our employees! After the machines are disassembled, cleaned and then reassembled, they get calibrated to make sure everything is working properly. This led to my final lesson: 4. The importance of doing PMs (strategic planning) with calibrations (assessments) As a company we must determine what “dust” (barrier) we need to remove because it is holding us back from functioning at our best. We need to use the right tools (plan) to get rid of the “dust” (barriers) that are keeping us from running at our best capacity. And, we must “calibrate” (access) if those plans/changes are working. PMs may not be fun to do but they are essential for greater efficiency! Thank you QDS, Inc. Field Service Technicians for keeping our clients’ machines running at full efficiency!
