There are [very] few people I'd happily sit through 2+ hours of panto for, but STAND – our charity partners in our project to rewrite the story of dementia – are one of the exceptions, and closing out 2023 with them was a definite highlight. boom saloon.'s projects use the methodology of Asset Based Community Development to inspire and empower those facing challenges – we never parachute in, look down on people or claim to have the 'solution' to their particular challenge. Instead, we take time to get to know them as individuals – their stories, their sadness, their highlights, their complications. It's a part of the process that's too often skipped, deemed to be too time consuming; for us, it's vital. It allows us to continuously maintain real connections and truly co-create very special projects which are informed and personalised. I hope we are always able to continue in this manner, and can always take the time to laugh in and amongst the trials and tribulations <3 PS – Don't believe the hype: the face of dementia isn't always an older person cradled under the arm of a carer in purple. Sometimes it is, sometimes it's laughing in a rein-beer jumper like Gerry, sometimes it's smiling under a santa hat like Audrey. Franciscan Health's Social Impact Program is partnering with nonprofits to serve at-risk populations, and the next application deadline is May 31. Serving populations most in need in accordance with Franciscan's mission should be the focus of supported activities. These include people who have endured systemic racism, refugees and immigrants, chronically low resources, at-risk youth and others impacted by poor societal supports. Priority health needs, as defined by Franciscan Health's Needs assessment (available at https://lnkd.in/e9BMH6aD), include access to healthcare, food insecurity, house stability, social bridging, mental health and substance abuse. “This cornerstone initiative by Franciscan Health is aimed at creating strong partnerships with community organizations to enhance the health and wellbeing of those we are privileged to serve,” said Caitlin Leahy, senior vice president for the Franciscan Health Foundation and Community Health Improvement. “Our purpose is to drive sustainable change and empower our communities to lead healthier lives. Focusing on our most vulnerable populations, we are committed to collaborating, supporting and providing the necessary resources to address critical health challenges.” Partner agencies will be announced in mid-July. At the end of this post I'm going to ask you to do two things. They'll take 2 minutes and will make a difference to an estimated 136,000 homeless young people. Did you know Youth Concern houses homeless young people? It had been the charity's dream for a long time. When I became CEO in March 2020, I walked into a building site. I worked with Volunteer It Yourself charity on fit out through that first Covid summer, appointed Project Manager Emma and team in September 2020 and then welcomed our first young resident a week before Christmas 2020. Three years on, 21 young people have lived with us. That's 21 people who were homeless before the age of 25. Today, we’re at full capacity and have a waiting list. Our Next Step Project is a physical expression of how Youth Concern delivers its vision and purpose, to improve quality of life for vulnerable 13-25 year olds in Aylesbury Vale. The project literally turns young people’s lives around. B. had been sleeping rough, working as an apprentice and studying for maths A level when she moved in with us. Having completed an access to higher education course and received lots of support from Emma and her team, B. accepted one of her 5 university offers and last October moved to Southampton to study marine biology. This is the difference made by giving young people a roof over their head, a listening ear, an experienced manager and the wrap-around support of our Drop-in Centre (fun, projects, counselling, advice). Read Kristiana’s thoughts on her appointment below. Why are you excited about becoming a Lighthouse Board member? Lighthouse Foundation was the recipient of a fundraiser that was instigated and run by TEN Women in 2022. As a director of TEN Women, I learnt about the incredible work that Lighthouse undertakes and was so impressed with its transformative impact on individuals and communities, focusing on youth homelessness and changing the lives of young women escaping forced marriage and modern slavery. Being on the board allows me to channel my passion for social change into tangible action. I believe every human has the right to a safe and secure home, the right support and the confidence to rebuild their lives. Have you observed anything that makes Lighthouse particularly unique? I cannot even begin to answer this question! The Young Women’s Freedom Program focused on supporting young women who have escaped forced marriage and modern slavery was my first real insight into the incredible work Lighthouse does. Then it became quickly apparent that this is just a small part of the bigger picture – providing care and support for homeless children and young people to heal and thrive is an enormous task – and the breadth of the services Lighthouse gives is astonishing. Anyone who has had anything to do with Lighthouse will agree, that is incredibly special. In your first year as a Board member, what impact would you like to make? I would like to help raise awareness of the issues relating to youth homelessness, assist in raising funds to continue with these incredible support programs from building houses to offering mental support, and participate in putting together fundraising ideas to promote within my extensive network and beyond. Having worked for many NFP boards, I can hopefully bring in a fresh perspective and some good ideas and experience from those other boards. As a community member, what is a simple action someone can take to help make a difference to young people experiencing homelessness? Community members are crucial to raising awareness and funds for charities such as Lighthouse Foundation. Local businesses can get involved with sponsorships or in-kind donations, individuals can get behind charity walks and other events organised locally to raise funds. Many businesses are willing to support community initiatives and these collaborations can enhance the impact of fundraising efforts enormously. It is my absolute pleasure to share our 2023 Community Benefit Report with you all. In total in 2023, John Muir Health contributed nearly $195 million through our health system activities, health professions education, charity care, serving Medi-Cal patients, and though our Community Health Improvement programs and partnerships. Our partnerships are so integral to support the health and wellbeing of our entire community. In collaboration, we have been able to achieve such profound impact; however, as disparities continue to widen, we have a journey ahead of us. In 2023, we launched our 3-year grant cycle, where we invested in 33 nonprofit partnerships addressing: -Healthcare Access and Delivery -Behavioral Health -Housing and Homelessness Prevention We understand that health outcomes are directly impacted by racism and societal inequities, and as part of our Community Benefit funding strategy, we increased our investment in each of our partner organizations to create and adopt interventions that promote equity within their individual organizations, boards, staff and the community served. This work was further supported by creating a Structural Racism Learners Cohort. This year’s report highlights the accomplishments of four partner organizations: Operation Access, Goodness Village - Livermore, Support4Recovery and Alameda County Community Food Bank. Each partner demonstrated significant achievements in implementing their Structural Racism interventions. I encourage each of you to continue to learn from one another, commit yourselves to try something new, and take a leap into something you’ve been wanting to try.
