CHARLES SYMINGTON IS THE NEW PRESIDENT OF PRIMUM FAMILIAE VINI Each year, Primum Familiae Vini (PFV) – an association of twelve prestigious families from the world of wine – appoints one of its members as President to oversee the association for the year and act as its representative at various events around the world. This year, Charles Symington of Symington Family Estates in Portugal succeeds Véronique Drouhin of Maison Joseph Drouhin in France as PFV President for the period July 2024 to June 2025. Charles Symington: "I am extremely honored to be taking over from my predecessors at Primum Familiae Vini and to support our twelve families who share the same values: the culture of excellence, love and respect for the earth and the terroir, and the powerful desire to remain family-run, independent businesses and transmit the heritage of our ancestors to the next generation. These are particularly exciting times at PFV. The last 12 months have been fruitful under Véronique Drouhin's leadership, with major advances on climate change issues within the technical committee. Among initiatives that I would like to draw, I will very shortly be proposing that the technical committee focuses on the evaluation of Artificial Intelligence in viticulture and winemaking, a subject of the future that will enable the new generations within the 12 families to contribute their knowledge and share it with our entire group. #PFV #primumfamiliaevini #PFVPrize #familybusiness #familyowned #generations #creativity #innovation #Sustainability #future #transmission #excellence #management #buildthefuture #inspired #history #heritage #passion

One Health | Nutrition | Agroecology | Food Sovereignty | Sustainable Food system | Youth Inclusion |
Is it possible to ensure an ethical and responsible approach to digitalization and traceability that supports agroecological farmer cooperatives? That is the title of my presentation for the panel "Agroecological Transitions Towards Sustainable Food Systems* during the Shaping Gastronomy - Regenerating Food Systems and Society conference hosted by the International Gastronomic Society at the Università di Scienze Gastronomiche from the 26th to the 28th of September. 🗓️ You can find more details about the event here: https://lnkd.in/dhuTgZN5 I will present the ATTESTED project, which focuses on two key agroecological principles: 🔹 Participation (Principle 13) 🔹 Co-creation of Knowledge (Principle 8) Throughout the project, we work hand-in-hand with supply chain actors, including farmers who have been actively involved since the proposal phase. They are not just beneficiaries—they are core members of our consortium, collaborating with research institutes and pilot implementations. If you're attending the conference, please join us! I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas. 🙌 #Agroecology #SustainableFoodSystems #Traceability #Digitalization #ATTESTED #DRG4Food Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL Valdibella cooperativa agricola CommonsLab Paola Migliorini Chiara Flora Bassignana

In Florence at the Logge Uffizi Corti, headquarter of the Accademia dei Georgofili, were celebrated the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the OIV - L'Organizzazione Internazionale della Vigna e del Vino in the presence of the President Prof. Luigi Moio. The event was organized by Accademia Italiana della Vite e del Vino Over the course of one hundred years, the OIV - L'Organizzazione Internazionale della Vigna e del Vino has had the great merit of having developed a scientific doctrine based on 1432 resolutions in which there is a sound and rigorous logic that has allowed the development of viticulture and quality wine at an international level, thanks to the contribution of thousands of experts and researchers from many universities and research centres around the world. In a century there has been a continuous growth of the member countries thanks to the constant and effective diplomatic work carried out by all the directors general who have succeeded one another at the helm of the OIV. This was the opportunity to anticipate the analysis of the state of the wine sector that will be presented in detail on April 25 by the general manager John Barker. Register now: https://lnkd.in/duu6e9aX In the last few years, the global wine sector has been facing one of the most challenging periods in its recent history. Extreme weather conditions linked to climate change are increasingly causing significant damage to harvests in all major wine producing regions worldwide, as evidenced by the small production of 2023, the lowest since 1961. On the demand side, global wine consumption has been sharply declining since 2018. This downturn has affected also international trade, which is giving the first signs of a slowdown after years of consistent growth. The export volumes in 2023 were the lowest recorded in the last fifteen years, a decline that can be partially attributed to the global inflationary crisis that began in 2022. For over a century, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (#OIV), through its Department of Statistics and with the fundamental contribution of the expert groups in statistics (#Statco) and economics (#Ecomar), has been providing economic and statistical analysis of the global wine sector by publishing four annual reports. This work is of paramount importance to the industry, establishing the OIV as one of the global references for wine-related data. #LiendelaVigne #Observer #oiv100 #research #viticulture #vine #wine #oenology #economy #law #safety #health #consumer #accademiageorgofili #accademiaitalianaviteevino

Revitalising Pokolbin: The Cedar Mill Hunter Valley Located on the corner of McDonalds and Broke roads in Pokolbin within the tourist node, the ambitious development seeks to harness the region's viticultural heritage, transforming a 41-hectare site into a vibrant hub for local and international visitors. What is proposed is a multi-faceted development encompassing a museum, convention centre and tourism clusters. Each cluster is designed to offer unique experiences, from exploring the rich history of winemaking in the museum cluster to hosting large-scale events and conference in the convention cluster. The tourism cluster aims to support the principal uses by offering a range of activities, including wine tasting, dining and retail experiences. Historically, the site has been vacant pasture for about 50 years, with recent investigations confirming that the soil profile is not considered to be prime viticultural land and offers extremely limited capacity for wine grape production. According to Crea’s study on the “Land and Rental Market in Italy in 2023”, the highest-valued vineyards remain those of Barolo DOCG, which reach 1.5 million euros. On the podium, they are followed by the very rare ones of the Alto Adige Doc in the area of Lake Caldaro, which touch 800,000 euros per hectare, and the DOCG vineyards of the hills of Montalcino, the land of Brunello, which reach EUR 1m, while the DOCG vineyards of Valdobbiadene, the cradle (along with Conegliano) of Prosecco DOCG, touch the 600,000 euro maximum quotation. Peaks of 500,000 euros are still touched in Alto Adige (in the lower Venosta Valley and the Isarco Valley), they reach 480,000 euros per hectare in the Bolgheri DOCG

Today Julia Harding writes on Viúva Gomes bringing life back to the sands of Colares, Europe's most westerly vineyards. 'Planting a vineyard is a long-term venture. Or perhaps I should say adventure. A massive investment and no return for at least three years and possibly a lot longer, and, like all farming, even more precarious in a period of climate extremes and unpredictability. Nowhere more so than in Colares on the Atlantic coast of Portugal about 40 km (25 miles) north-west of Lisbon, shown on the World Atlas of Wine map of Lisbon and the Setúbal Peninsula. As Simon Woolf and Ryan Opaz point out in their book 'Foot Trodden: Portugal and the wines that time forgot', Cabo de Roca in the far south-west of the Colares wine region is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and the windiest. As the photos below show, planting here requires traditional wisdom and skills, courage, a lot of hard work, and a bulldozer. Today the Colares vineyards, like those in parts of the Sierras de Málaga, compete with the real-estate demands of tourism.' https://lnkd.in/g5aVAiWD
