You might be wondering what happens in the job market when students hit the pavement looking for summer jobs. New grads could have an impact but more often than not - new grads feel burnt out and want to take the summer off. They typically “hit the pavement” in the fall post their spring graduation. Other students who are looking for summer jobs aren’t really your competition because you are not looking for a short-term summer job but are looking for longer term full-time employment. So don’t worry: stay calm and carry on. As a reminder: I work 1:1 with young adults (ages 18-34). I support them in identifying their career direction and guide them through the job search/networking process into landing the job that will launch their career. It’s that time of year. You may have recently graduated and/or just come back from some summer travel. Now you are evaluating the next steps in your life. What kind of work do you want to do? How do you go about getting it? Maybe you go back to school instead? Lots of options and how do you know what is the right one. Where the heck do you even start? Where you are at is SO understandable. Knowing which way to turn next can be very difficult and scary. You are not alone in this. As a reminder: I work 1:1 with young adults (ages 18-34). You want to change jobs … in fact, you might even want to change your career. I call that a pivot. Have no despair. It absolutely can be done. Pivots necessitate repositioning what you’ve done and being able to explain how you’ve grown and changed as a person to now want to work in a new area of focus. The key is to maintain provide a positive orientation on past jobs and places of employment … that can be tough. As a reminder: I work 1:1 with young adults (ages 18-34). Maybe you are paralyzed from taking action on the career front because you can’t decide which career path to pursue. Possibly, you are scared that you’ll make the wrong choice. In fact, you might be downright terrified that making the wrong choice in your career will be an irrevocable mistake from which you will never recover. Your feelings are valid, of course they are. But, they are not substantiated in reality. There is virtually NO decision you can make related to your career which will be an irrevocable mistake. Whatever happens in your next job (good/bad) will be a learning to help guide and progress you forward. As a reminder: I work 1:1 with young adults (ages 18-34). So I hear you can sometimes get distracted … even procrastinate? I get it. You need to stay focused. You need to be clear on your career direction. You need to know how you will approach the job market (do NOT rely only on job postings) and you need to be well organized in your outreach, persistent and consistent. Getting distracted and procrastinating (and even leaning on your ADHD) are excuses but you know that, right? As a reminder: I work 1:1 with young adults (ages 18-34). I support them in identifying their career direction and guide them through the job search/networking process into landing the job that will launch their career. You have had a job interview. In fact, you have just finished the 3rd interview and you are waiting to hear: did you or did you not get the job. More often than not - if you hear back quickly, it’s usually good news. If there is a time delay … it often (not always) means that the employer has likely extended an Offer to someone else and when they get that person signed on - then, they’ll circle back to you with notice of the declination. That said, after a week of waiting you should follow-up and check-in because it could also just be a delay related to administration. As a reminder: I work 1:1 with young adults (ages 18-34). I support them in identifying their career direction and guide them through the job search/networking process into landing the job that will launch their career.
