What’s Your Center? Have you ever paused to think about what drives your decisions, priorities, and how you spend your time? In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey introduces the idea of being “centered.” It’s the invisible compass guiding your life. For many of us, though, that center isn’t something we consciously choose. Instead, it’s shaped by external factors like: Work: Career becomes the top priority. Family: Every choice revolves around loved ones. Money: Financial goals dictate focus. Pleasure: Comfort and enjoyment take center stage. These aren’t inherently bad, but Covey points out a key problem—they’re unstable. When life shifts, they can leave us feeling lost or off balance. So, what’s the alternative? Covey suggests we live principle-centered lives, guided by timeless values like integrity, fairness, and service. Unlike external factors, principles don’t change. They create clarity, resilience, and balance, no matter what life throws at you. Want to figure out your center? Start with these questions: 1. What do I value most? 2. Are my decisions aligned with those values? 3. What’s one small change I can make today to live more intentionally?
