OBELISK drone flights at Reveille Peak Ranch is a great way to start the day and breakup the week.
And let's be real...
It's just as crucial to have teambuilding events with our drones too!
Erika Armstrong This seems off-brand for you. I'll buy that drink. I think it's an important conversation that more "real" pilots and "pretend" pilots should be having.
As both a GA pilot and commercial 'drone operator', I have a different perspective. If, by suggesting Part-107 pilots are not 'real' pilots, you mean they aren't qualified to pilot the 50-year old airframes and aging tech that make up the average of the GA fleet (according to FAASafety.gov) then you would, of course, be right. There is more technology in many commercial drones than in most of the GA fleet. Managing that tech and the associated tool chains involved in many commercial use cases while maintaining situational awareness through telepresence is a skill unique to pilots of UAS/RPAs. And when those missions, (properly waivered) involve flight beyond visual line of sight, those pilots are flying by reference to instruments alone-- something that is very familiar to you, I imagine.
But I know that's not what you mean. Admittedly, the bar for the license isn't very high. And, sadly, appreciation for the risks drones pose to manned aircraft when operated unprofessionally is even lower among **some** drone-only pilots who've never felt the sobering responsibility that comes with having their butts in the seat when souls onboard > 0. But to say they aren't pilots misses the point that as Remote Pilots in Command, they have a responsibilty for safety and, as just one example, to see-and-avoid other aircraft in the conduct of their missions. They have more, too. A view that Part-107 pilots aren't real pilots seems to relieve them of any duty to fulfill those responsibilities and to be active participants in the safe integration of UAS into the NAS. Surely you can appreciate that this has implications for the safety of all aircraft and the passengers that even 'real' pilots and crew are responsible for?
Your bio is truly impressive, and I have tremendous respect for your experience and accomplishments. However, despite an assertion that, "I've worked in all aspects of aviation!", there **seems** to be a gap in your professional experience with respect to operations conducted under Part-107 of the FARs. Did I miss it? Are you a Part-107 license holder? If not, maybe it's time for more training to expand your already impressive resume and, with the added experience, also your perspective that **may** be a little out of touch with a rapidly growing segment of commercial aviation. It will be easy for you. You're clearly incredibly capable, and much of it is training you've already had. Yep... the same training.
Unless your post was a joke and I didn't get it, I'll go so far as to suggest a retraction and broader discussion of the topic. It's bigger than your marketing and your brand which are both exceptional. It's about the safety of the NAS, and I genuinely believe that you can appreciate that. Anything else would seem to be off-brand.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Welcome to Finland and the arctic. Autonomous flight at -33 Celsius (-27F). Operating at these temperatures requires a hardcore team as well. Fantastic work!

UAS pilots play a key role in the use of #drone technology for a wide range of applications in various industries. The extensive job profile typically includes tasks such as flight planning, pre-flight checks, conducting flight missions or post-flight analysis. #UAS pilots must comply with numerous regulations, ensure compliance with safety protocols and continuously update their knowledge of the systems they operate. In addition, they should be able to troubleshoot technical problems and perform maintenance when necessary.
The significant amount of expertise and practical experience required makes the establishment of unified qualification standards and structured training for drone #pilots in Europe essential. The UAV DACH Competence Group Qualification & Training has recently addressed this task.
A new initiative led by Andreas Ritter (Vereinigung Cockpit) aims to define requirements for the "UAS pilot job profile" in order to ensure a uniform quality and safety standard.
The aim is to develop a concept that covers the respective requirements for all operating scenarios of the special category with a modular training program.
Though it's still just a concept, the Avian: eVTOL Drop Drone by Galaxy Unmanned Systems LLC shows some next-level thinking.
Imagine a drone that could smoothly switch between vertical takeoff, rapid flight, and hovering modes with #modular, #COTS parts and twin-boom wing, specifically designed to adapt to wind conditions thanks to its swiveling #canard and rear #winglet-like control surfaces! The propeller shutoff and smooth belly landing system means easy, safe landings, even in tough environments, without complex landing systems.
Plus, the option for #solar panels in the design hints at longer, more efficient missions. Whether flying solo or in an airship-deployed #swarm, this concept offers a glimpse of the future of #unmanned aerial systems!
Today on Morecambe Bay Drones...
We take a look at the bird life around Morecambe Bay and how the team flying the ARACE Griffin Pro as the Future Urban Cargo Autonomous Aircraft worked with local environmental policy as well as reviewing the laws on drone overflight of wildlife to engineer a risk management based solution such that the drone could fly in a manner that did not disturb the wildlife.
Birds are by far the most populous users of ultra low airspace and yet they rarely appear on drone legislation or guidance and the regulatory documentation is at best contradictory.
For drones to fly in urban airspace requires significant thought and consideration with regards how to fly with the avian population. The moment a large drone takes out a bird and its filmed, the RSPB will through the MSM further destroy the reputation of the UK Drone Industry.

One of those waiting around for the rain to stop mornings... 🙄🌂
We always double check the weather forecast before a drone survey, but this project had already been delayed due to the weather and these days it feels like we'll never get ideal conditions in drizzly Manchester! 🌧
We managed to complete this survey between a few showers, but the waiting gave me a few minutes for a photoshoot with this little poser... 🤳📸
Some might say that's a bit overcautious, but it turns out that although the drone may fare well during the flight itself despite rain, as the brushless motors are largely unaffected by the weather, the wet could cause corrosion over time, leading to more unpredictable and dangerous flight. 😵
I'd rather wait a couple of minutes instead of wasting the longevity of our equipment. 👍
Fellow drone pilots - would you fly in the rain at all? What's your experience with flying in bad weather? Any tips, advice, or recommendations?
