Our initial focus with the PEPSMOL© platform is on inflammatory airway diseases, such as severe asthma that doesn’t respond to current treatments. The Taiwan Pavilion made a significant impact at the 2024 BIO International Convention in San Diego from June 3-6. Organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (Taiwan) and other governmental bodies, the pavilion featured the capabilities of 10 leading Taiwanese pharmaceutical companies. It highlighted Taiwan’s strengths in new drug development, precision medicine, smart health, and agricultural biotechnology. The University of Glasgow has joined forces with leading biotech company EVOTEC to develop an innovative drug aimed at improving heart disease treatment. Evotec will support work being undertaken by Professor Will Fuller and his team to co-develop small molecules targeting a well validated ion transporter implicated in cardiac arrhythmias. The backing is in the form of beLAB1407 Funding which was launched by Evotec and pharma company Bristol Myers Squibb to identify new disease-modifying therapeutic targets and platforms with the goal to develop these to new #spinout companies. The beLAB1407 award to Professor Fuller’s team represents the first for the University since the scheme – which bridges discovery science into investment-ready opportunities ready for preclinical development – was widened out last year to include more institutions. The team’s new findings offer the opportunity to address an age-old problem in securing selectivity which has hampered the development of safe and effective therapeutics drugs for this important class of targets. Using a combination of Evotec’s medicinal chemistry expertise coupled to the cardiovascular know-how of the Glasgow team, the project aims to deliver novel hits with proof of concept in a variety of models. University of Tartu is participating in the European cancer study consortium OPTIMA 🇪🇺🧬🥼 One of the many goals of OPTIMA is to produce a clinical decision support tool to assist clinicians in making evidence-based decisions for medical interventions of different types of cancer. This week, me together with Mart Kals, research fellow in statistical genomics, and Raivo Kolde, associate professor of health informatics, are representing Estonia 🇪🇪 in the OPTIMA prototyping workshop in Berlin, Germany. 🇩🇪 The three of us are currently formulating prostate cancer risk calculation. Peptidomimetics opens new opportunities in drug discovery 🔬 A collaborative effort by researchers from the University of Birmingham, Bristol, and Leeds has unveiled a simple peptide modification that could revolutionize drug discovery. By modifying peptides, they aim to make them effective in diagnosing diseases and developing new drugs. Traditional drug targets include enzymes with well-defined binding sites. However, protein-protein interactions (PPIs) regulate most biological functions, and targeting these could open up new drug discovery avenues. PPIs are challenging due to their larger, less defined binding sites, but understanding and controlling them is crucial. In a recent study published in *Chemical Science*, the team focused on PPIs involving β-strand formation. By modifying the peptide backbone, they enhanced binding strength, paving the way for drug discovery targeting β-strand mediated PPIs. Their approach shows promise for improving diagnostics and treatments for various diseases.
