Each week approximately 115 people die by suicide in the UK and research has shown that statistically, 10% of suicide each year could be work related (all data from the Office for National Statistics, Hazards campaign). As today marks World Suicide Prevention day, it gives us the opportunity to raise awareness of suicide and the steps we can take to prevent it. At RMA- The Royal Marines Charity, we aim to reduce the stigma around speaking out and seeking help, we want to create an environment where those who need help feel comfortable in stepping forward, lifting the lid. We’re building something more than just a brand with a product to sell. Behind that product there’s a culture, and a community, and a philanthropy that’s getting involved with veterans, law enforcement, fire departments, nurses, etc. This brand stands for something, and that something is the patriotic nature of this country that these groups sacrifice for. It’s always struck me how powerful of a choice it is for a young man to decide he’s going to lay down his life for this country and join the military. The same goes for deciding to become a fireman, or a police officer, or a medical worker. Each of these requires the sacrifice of putting the country, community, etc before yourself. That’s patriotism, and it’s powerful stuff. The Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust (The Trust) have awarded funding worth over £70,000 to five fantastic projects designed to mitigate the challenges posed by long or frequent involuntary separation on families, spouses, and serving personnel. The Apart Not Alone programme was developed as part of the Trust’s three-year framework, shaped by insights gathered during the Trust’s public consultation in summer 2023. This evidenced based approach ensures targeted support for those requiring special consideration while addressing diverse needs through effective, tailored solutions. Collaboration with beneficiaries played a pivotal role in the programmes design. Consultation with those directly impacted provided invaluable insights, enabling a shared understanding of challenges and ensuring that the project aligns with evidenced needs. These new awards aim to address the emotional and practical impacts of separation, loneliness, and isolation experienced by serving families, including Reservists. Are you a military veteran living in or around Lewiston, Idaho? You are not alone, and there are so many resources available for help. Here is a list of some resources available to veterans in or around the Lewiston region. Please let me know if I can expand this list. There's a program called Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) that can help with rent assistance, utility assistance, rapid rehousing of homeless veterans, gas vouchers, and up to $1,200 in automotive repairs. They will also help with legal assistance, such as evictions or debt collection, child support, and a few other things. That's just some of the services they offer. SSVF grantees vary depending on location. The Blue Mountain Action Council out of Walla Walla is an amazing group that serves a few regionally nearby communities.
