Here are our 4 top tips for a safe and enjoyable walk on Dartmoor this Christmas: 1) 📱Make sure your phone is fully charged & if you have one, take a battery bank with you. The cold weather can drain a battery quickly so don’t get caught out if you need to call for help. 2) 🎅 Wear the correct clothing, even if you’re just planning a short stroll, the weather can change quickly & temperatures can drop fast, so make sure you’ve got your waterproofs with you, warm clothing & suitable footwear. 3) ☃️ Plan your route & let someone know where you are going. Take some food, something hot to drink & a head torch. Fog can make even the most well-known trail unrecognisable so always have your trusty map & compass with you. 4) 🎄Did you know we are on standby 365 days of the year including Christmas Day? Check out this daring Rattlesnake our team encountered! Rattlesnake safety is important, especially when spending time outdoors in areas where these snakes may be present. Here are some reminders on how to stay safe around rattlesnakes: ☀️ Stay Alert and Aware: Keep an eye on your surroundings, especially in areas known to have rattlesnakes such as rocky areas, brushy terrain, and tall grass. ☀️ Wear Appropriate Footwear: When hiking or walking in snake-prone areas, wear sturdy boots that cover your ankles to protect against snake bites. ☀️ Stick to Clear Trails: Avoid walking through tall grass or dense underbrush where snakes may be hiding. ☀️ Use a Walking Stick: A walking stick can help you probe ahead and alert snakes of your presence, giving them time to move away. ☀️ Listen for Rattles: Learn to recognize the sound of a rattlesnake’s rattle. If you hear it, stop and locate where the sound is coming from to avoid the snake. ☀️ Do Not Approach or Handle Snakes: If you encounter a rattlesnake, give it plenty of space and do not attempt to capture or handle it. ☀️ Stay Calm if Bitten: In the rare event of a snake bite, stay calm, remove any restrictive clothing or jewelry near the bite area, and seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to suck out venom or use tourniquets. ☀️ Educate: Learn more about rattlesnakes, their habits, and local snakebite first aid to be better prepared in case of an encounter. #rattlesnakesafety #landscaping #desertlandscaping #snakes #desert #wildthings
