Another entry into our MD promotion series. I met with someone I have known for many years who kindly shared with me some of their tips on how to make that step from Director to MD. The elusive jump? Here's their advice (and thank you... you know who you are!) 1.) The 3 Ps. Performance, Personality and Platform. You need all three with a proven track record / pathway. The hardest (feels like a mirage sometimes) is the last P - Platform. 2.) Credible backing. You need 360 degree support but most importantly you need a senior leader who will put their own credibility on the line to support your bid 3.) Perseverance - the 4th P. Never give up and be prepared to take calculated risks with your career choices to create the pathway / platform. If one route doesn't work, don't stick around hoping things will change. Make the necessary decision to try a different route So there you have it. This is coming from someone working in the financial services sector who has covered cap markets, private banking and corporate banking - to name a few. Someone who has demonstrated entrepreneurial flair inside and outside of work. Someone who said in our meeting that when it comes to career timing: "You just know. Luke joined JTC, along with other team members from Segue Partners, when their firm was acquired in 2021. He is a key player in providing a range of sophisticated fund solutions that meet the needs of private equity, venture capital and family offices - and his leadership has been instrumental in the success of the team there. It’s a time to celebrate the small and big wins alike, recognizing that every step has brought us closer to our aspirations. Whether it’s personal growth, professional milestones, or community impact, acknowledging these moments strengthens our resilience and inspires continued effort. Looking forward, November offers the perfect opportunity to refine our strategies and reinvigorate our efforts. With only a few weeks left before the year concludes, it’s important to focus on what matters most, plan wisely, and execute with purpose. Let this month be filled with determination, clarity, and an unwavering belief in the potential for success, setting the stage for a strong and confident conclusion to the year.

After nearly 18 incredible years, I made the bittersweet decision, last week, to step away from my role at CIBC to pursue a new endeavor. It has been a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and lessons I’ll carry with me forever. Over nearly two decades, I had the privilege of working across three countries and seven businesses, partnering with some of the most talented, driven, and inspiring people in the sector. Together, we built a winning U.S. franchise poised for growth, stability, profitability, and market resilience; I couldn’t be prouder of the team’s accomplishments. Leadership and building a new business are full of lessons—some hard-earned. As I reflect on my time, here are four that stand out: 1. You work for your team, not the other way around. Great leadership is about enabling others to do their best work—not about titles or hierarchy. When you focus on serving your team, the results take care of themselves. 2. Don’t just manage problems; model resilience. Challenges are inevitable. Leading with transparency and optimism makes it possible to tackle the tough moments and come out stronger. 3. Be attuned to your team—both what’s said and unsaid. Leadership requires listening, empathy, and truly understanding what your people need. Sometimes the most important signals come from what isn’t spoken in a meeting, and those are often the ones that matter most. 4. Great client experiences come with deep care-whether through innovative solutions or simply showing up consistently, putting the client at the center of every decision ensures lasting trust and success. To my colleagues: thank you for your trust, your friendship, your resilience during the early days of our U.S. build, and for making the last 18 years unforgettable. To my clients: thank you for the opportunities to collaborate and support your growth ambitions - I look forward to working with you in my next chapter. This decision wasn’t easy, but I’m excited for what lies ahead. For now, I’m taking a moment to reflect, recharge, get some quality time with my lovely wife Michelle and daughter, and prepare for the next chapter.
