There's a big difference between data center infrastructure and services. Investors hoping to gain exposure to the booming digital infrastructure market should know that many companies billing themselves as data center businesses, in fact, do not own the data centers in which they operate, says Omar Jaffrey, founder of digital infrastructure private capital firm Palistar Capital. Many tech and telecommunications companies in the digital space have sold their physical data center assets in order to monetize their core businesses, which frequently means services, such as security and computing. Services have lower margins compared to hard assets, says Jaffrey, and therefore offer different expected return profiles over the long term.
