Day 9 lectures took place in Cairns, Queensland, Australia and we got the privilege of hearing from NBL Cairns Taipans staff members. Sports scientist, Stephanie Shirley, touched on the importance of sports scientist in high performance sports. Her presentation highlighted using Catapult systems to detect movements with individual athletes during training. This data is used to measure specific variables within volume and intensity of sessions. A few important key points were made include; the use of load data to minimize injury risk, suggested load periodization buildout for coaching staff to maximize drill selections, importance of live tracking versus retrospective data collection, and predictable data trends allows for better management to stay on top of possible unfortunate outcomes/injuries. Important mission statement from Taipans staff was improving game readiness and incorporating a checklist, and the balance between numbers and people. At the end of the day, objective data collecting is important in showing trends but subjective information plays a huge role when dealing with the health and performance of an individual. Was a great presentation and discussion!

Come behind the scenes of our new Float to Live campaign. For the following three days, we'll introduce you to each cast member, but to kick off we delve into how the campaign language was tested and improved. We asked the University of Portsmouth to undertake practical research using The Extreme Environments Laboratory. 11 women and 14 men aged 20 to 60 volunteered for floats in different realistic, open water conditions. Participants had no previous experience of swimming or cold water research and weren't experienced water users. 68 % were not confident in their ability to float. The participants undertook three standard floats wearing swimming costumes and one fully clothed float. To test the effectiveness of our messaging, they first floated with no guidance. Then they watched our previous advert and read our previous poster before floating again. They were given individual float coaching from a qualified instructor before floating a third time. Finally, they simulated a fall into water for their last float. Floating difficulty and confidence were recorded before and after each float, and floating competence, perceived exertion and floating efficiency were recorded during each float. The research showed that our advice improved each participants ability to float, the individual coaching then further enhanced their ability and confidence. Based on these findings, recommendations were made by the University and accepted by us. Our updated float steps seek to explain floating in plain language, and mirrors what a coach would teach. For example, it was noted that words like sculling might not be easily understood, so this was changed to a description of what the person should do (moving your hands and using your arms and legs). Hopefully, by using clear and concise language we can save even more lives. The five float steps are now: 1. Tilt your head back with ears submerged 2. Relax and try to breathe normally 3. Move your hands to help you stay afloat 4. It’s OK if your legs sink - we all float differently 5. Spread your arms and legs to improve stability #RNLI #Press #FloatToLive #WaterSafety #DrowningPrevention #Media #Research https://lnkd.in/eGfpgBPj
