It's #ThrowbackThursday! Today, I wanted to highlight my talk with Erik Salo, who was Vice President at Seagate Technology at the time of the interview. Erik has recently moved on to #VicePresident at Panasas, but I wanted to highlight the challenges of of #BigData Storage. Big data generally refers to a data set too large to store and process with traditional methods like a #relationaldatabase management system (#RDMS). Objects are an effective way of storing big data because they make the #data #globally addressable. Object storage uses #metadata that can tag the data, making it easier to search and access. However, most applications are still file-based, even the latest applications for media entertainment. This practice creates tension between big data and #applications, which has created challenges for #ITprofessionals. Wallace Boston, Ed.D thanks for your insights and wisdom. Your observations are spot on and will inevitably come to fruition. I recently had a discussion with a university president about the diaspora of talented individuals leaving the academy and why. Moreover, I was also speaking to a CEO of a rather large higher ed company that has serviced colleges and universities for decades. The common refrain is too much inertia, not enough opportunity, too much disruption, the demographic cliff, no future, etc…. I say horse hockey. This zeitgeist or “spirit of our time” will be defined by systemness where colleges and universities share resources and innovate by way of collaboration, a digital ecosystem that will transform the student and university experience, academic innovation which will include more microcredentials that truly are portable and stackable across vast networks, better teaching and learning tools that allow for true engagement b/w students and experts, etc. I could go on and on, but to this old dog there has never been a better time to be in higher education.
