As organisations grow maturity in a single cloud it makes sense that they would look to maximise their return on investment by leveraging bespoke or niche components of other cloud vendors where it makes sense. Picking the right tool for the right job, or in this case the right cloud for the right job is a trend we saw growing in 2023, and it looks like its going to continue into the new year.
Will 2024 be the year of multi-cloud & a return to on-prem? The latest Forrester Predictions 2024 Cloud Computing Report outlines some of what we can expect in 2024. Major cloud providers will start to lose control due to major disruptions to their way of doing business on multiple fronts (e.g., chip shortages, WASI-enabled portability, sovereignty concerns, and new data center sustainability policies). The hyperscalers will adapt, of course, but it opens an opportunity for challengers. With new threats challenging their largest accounts, cloud service providers will bow to customer demands, even for standards around cloud cost management and optimisation. For cloud customers, 2024 will bring not only a more unsettled vendor landscape but more options. The rise of Oracle cloud. “Oracle steals hyperscaler business for more than 10 major accounts. Oracle is keen to break into the top echelon of cloud platforms, focusing on performance and cost advantages for large cloud consumers. With invigorated interest in AI, Oracle has another opportunity: offering massive compute power to help customers train and run their generative AI models on OCI. Oracle offers a low-latency AI supercomputer with powerful high performance and low-cost supercluster capabilities. Forrester anticipates that at least 10 major accounts will redirect significant spend to OCI, bringing at least $100 million in annual cloud spend each”. Forbes have also released a few Cloud Computing Predictions which align to the changing landscape of growth in Hybrid and Multi-Cloud environments. 1. Hybrid and Multi-Cloud Evolution. The era of one-size-fits-all cloud solutions is giving way to a more tailored and dynamic approach that combines public and private clouds. Hybrid and multi-cloud environments are set to redefine the paradigm, establishing themselves as the new normal for organisations of all sizes. Dubbed “n+1,” this approach consists of on-premises infrastructure plus anything else in the cloud, providing unparalleled flexibility. Businesses can now select the optimal cloud resources for specific workloads, and in doing so ensure redundancy and embrace vendor-agnostic solutions. 2. Navigating Multi-cloud Challenges. The increasing shift towards multi-cloud environments brings novel challenges. While solutions are emerging to simplify the intricate nature of multi-cloud setups, caution is advised against tools that merely conceal complexity without genuinely streamlining or reducing it. A little over 2 weeks into 2024, and at Cloud Ctrl we are already seeing the shift. We have seen an increase in enquiries for cloud cost management assistance for Oracle and Alibaba Cloud over and above the usual enquiry rate for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google. It’s going to be an interesting 2024. https://lnkd.in/gkm6_J6S
