***ASPRS Mid-South Regional Conference: 9-10 May, 2024 at ORNL*** + The deadline to submit abstracts/posters for the conference is this Friday (February 23). It’s free and you can do it virtual if you can’t travel. Also, you’ll be giving your talk amongst a low-stress crowd so it’s a great conference to share ideas. The abstract guidelines: + No format requirements, just a paragraph or two (under 200 words) that describes your proposed presentation. + The presentation, if accepted will be around 10-12 minutes long. We have not yet determined this as it will depend on number of abstracts submitted but it’s a good ballpark number for now. + No fee associated with the conference and a select number of presentations will be provided an opportunity to have their work published in a special issue of PE&RS journal based on the conference. + The conference requires US citizenship or US person status for attendance either in person or virtual. To preserve our open nature of the conference, we invite anybody, to submit a poster (electronic preferred) that we will display at the conference with your contact information and credit. If interested, please register for the conference and contact David Hughes. + I’m always open to input so send me an email if you have noticed some way in which this conference could best serve your needs. If you have any special considerations, I will work on those to make this an enjoyable conference for you. + I can never thank our sponsors enough for their generous financial and technical provisions to the conference: NV5, Planet, and baam.tech. Thank you! + Over the past updates to the conference, I have shared with you our great list of keynote speakers. In today’s update, I’ll share with you one of the workshops: A workshop on QGIS given by Randal Hale. This overview of the open source GIS desktop QGIS will cover a variety of topics and be a gentle introduction to the software. QGIS started back in 2006 and its first major release was version 1 in 2009. Since then, it has grown from a small niche project to a project with a functioning board, massive community, and several releases per year. It runs natively on Mac, Linux, and Windows as well as several other operating systems. We will cover the community, interface, data, and run through a lot of examples throughout this workshop. Prepare for bad jokes, stupid data tricks, and fun while we explore qgis. Randal Hale bio (provided by Randal): Owner and operator of North River Geographic Systems, Inc. Randal Hale has been in the geospatial industry for way too long. I generally work with Free and Open Source Software for Geoinformatics (QGIS, PostGIS, Geoserver, GRASS). NRGS is a business supporter of QGIS and a business partner with Mergin Maps. I will hopefully be found either sifting through data or sitting in a canoe - hopefully a canoe. + Don’t forget to register for the conference at https://lnkd.in/gQg2V-vd
