Did you know that data for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders is often left out of large federal datasets used to determine public health priorities and planning? Data may also be inaccessible to the very communities represented because of poor data visualization, fees, physical access, or failure to include community input in all stages of data collection. When data is unavailable to the community being represented, the community cannot highlight its strengths and use the data to help its members. Read how Dr. Ninez Ponce and UCLA Center for Health Policy Research researchers from the California CEAL Regional Team developed a framework to evaluate data accessibility, and learn from their recommendations for improvement: https://bit.ly/3VZUy2i

Image Text: The fundamental premises of data justice are that data should: (1) make visible community-driven needs, challenges, and strengths, (2) be representative of community; and (3) treat data in ways that promote community self-determination. The art of the online survey. I recently completed an online-only government survey which had this question. It’s amusing because it’s logically flawed, but sad because bad data is worse than no data at all. Adding questions which really add no value comes with a risk of polluting any good data, and increases friction, so reduces the number of respondents. With so much competition for eyes, we have to do better than this. #clinicalresearch #onlinesurveys #quantitativeresearch

Making data easily accessible and navigable is essential for crafting good public policy. This new data tool from our NORC at the University of Chicago Center on Public Safety & Justice does exactly that, by combining open crime data from more than 50 U.S. cities into one interactive dashboard. Much like public health systems can leverage data to detect emerging diseases, our hope is that a real-time tool like the Live Crime Tracker gives public officials, community organizations, researchers, and the public the ability to identify trends and develop solutions more immediately. If you're curious, you can take a look at the tracker's real-time data on the dashboard: https://lnkd.in/eqgShXs3
