Ahh! Sweet vindication!
Can you believe Google delayed the death of 3P cookies AGAIN?! I can!
If you've talked to me in the last 1-2 years, I've probably shared my hot take that this was going to happen. So why is this happening now?
There's a lot that goes into it, here are my thoughts:
1 / The UK called Privacy Sandbox anti-competitive
2 / Google is litigating 2 anti-trust lawsuits in the US this summer
3 / Death of 3p cookies has been seen as a power move for Google, and delaying it is likely part of the anti-trust calculus
4 / Despite almost 4 years of warning, most brands and agencies aren't ready
5 / Cookieless targeting has been 'solved' by a number of companies, but measurement is still the big hangup for cookies
In talking with brands and agencies, only the biggest brands are truly ready (as ready as one can be). If Google went through with 3P cookie death, it wouldnt reflect well for their legal arguments.
Each of these can be it's own post, lmk if that would be interesting to hear. And please drop a lightbulb emoji if you heard my hot take before the announcement!
