Helping CFOs become fractional CFOs so they can gain control of their careers (and personal lives). Author of “So You Want to be a Fractional CFO”.
Can I become a fractional CFO if my main background is as an F P & A Analyst? Yes, but.... An F P & A background is probably closer in skillset to a CFO than a controller is, because they (like a CFO) are looking forward, and the controller's job focuses on historical data. I would recommend one of several paths for you. 1. Start as the F P & A person within a fractional CFO firm and let them mentor you as a fractional CFO. 2. Start as a fractional F P & A, and as you earn the trust of your clients, they will ask you to expand into other areas typically performed by CFOs 3. Take a class on being a CFO from someone like The CFO Leadership Council. GrowCFO, or Andy Burrows. 4. Take a Master Class on Fractional CFOs from Carl Seidman, CSP, CPA a noted F P & A leader. The class starts later this week, and here is a link to it.

Of the six key CFO focus points identified by a recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG) article, my focus has been on two factors: talent management and digitalization. 📈A high-performing finance team is vital for long-term success. With colleagues who are open to new ways of working, including digitalization, increasing headcount becomes less necessary (therefore saving cost and increasing efficiency). 🤝Recently NetSuite's Matt Rosenthal reminded his network that being a great CFO goes far beyond crunching numbers and requires communication, collaboration, and community. I couldn't agree more. Exchanges with our investment team, sales colleagues, and other key players behind our funds are crucial. What skills do you think are most needed in finance? CEO & Co-Founder @QFlow.ai | Aligning Finance & GTM | Ops, Finance, Technology, Executive Management
We talk about GTM side of Finance all day long, but I realized today: we’re talking about superficial problems. In the last two days alone... VPs Finance told me that even with a reasonably sized team, the skillset and hours in the day are lacking to dig into the data and truly partner with GTM leaders. They told me that the data is messy, changing, and their FP&A planning tool is useless when it comes to the revenue side of things. (This is indeed the hardest and important part of planning and analysis). They told me that they're frustrated with the amount of analytical prep-work required to make a decision. And they told me that that RevOps is helpful but has a dozen other priorities — at least, until a few days before a board meeting. ☝🏽 Yes, these are several measurable areas of pain that we solve for Finance, RevOps, and CEOs. But what’s the actual business problem we’re solving? It’s accountability. If you can’t align the data, you can’t align executives. If you can’t align executives, you can’t align teams around intellectually honest marching orders.

Every incredible CFO you've ever looked up to was once also a nervous novice taking on their first ever C-suite role...😬 Take Tom Fencl for example, he is an esteemed CFO with heaps of experience but when he first started, he said from a scale of 1-10 that he ranked -1, when it came to feeling ready👎 Of course, when it came to technical skill he was certainly qualified but mentally he was not prepared for the level of responsibility that the CFO role requires. So, if you are considering that next step and have the technical skill but are anxious about the next step, know that that it is normal and you shouldn't wait because you may never feel ready 🚀 🚨However, if you don't feel ready and need some industry experience/technical support you should look at joining our Future CFO course in partnership with GrowCFO, which has helped hundreds of finance leaders gain the confidence and accreditation to own their first Chief Financial Officer role - link in comments. #cfoready #futurecfo #cfos

FP&A professionals can become great CFOs. That's because: 1. FP&A people are strategic thinkers. 2. They understand the business goals. 3. They easily become business partners. 4. They show leadership in guiding FP&A teams. 5. They are deeply involved in budgeting and forecasting. 6. They can connect with stakeholders and influence them. All of these qualities truly match the CFO persona. And storytelling is a key skill that all great CFOs have. So, when you think of a CFO, don't think just about figures and forecasts. Think about vision, trust, and collaboration. And leading a team of analysts with great stories. FP&A is definitely a faster path to the C-suite. To help FP&A professionals become great at storytelling, I'm hosting a webinar with Paul Barnhurst, The FPandA Guy. You'll learn: 1. Essential frameworks for data storytelling. 2. 3 key areas crucial for effective communication of your data insights 3. How to strike the balance between storytelling and analysis. Mark your calendars for April 17th at 12 PM ET. I'm sure you'll find it really valuable. See you on the webinar: https://lnkd.in/dWH96Y5W Repost ♻️ if you are coming. P.S. IBM CTO ♦ Digitally-savvy and Cyber-savvy Board Director ♦ CEO Advisor ♦ Competent Boards Faculty ♦ Making Purpose Real Through Board Excellence ♦ Global Perspective, Digital Transformation, AI, Cybersecurity, ESG Expert
The Board’s Critical Role in Effective Audit Committee Oversight!! Great advice from McKinsey & Company partners and Chris Halmy, seasoned Board Director, on preparing for the CFO role. 🔥 Few of my adds to this conversation: In today's volatile market, the board's deep engagement with the CFO is essential for making well-informed capital allocation decisions tied to business strategy. Here’s why it matters: Key Focus Areas: 1️⃣ Balance Sheet Health: Boards must prioritize discussions on balance sheet health, profitable growth, and inflation impacts. 2️⃣ Capital Allocation Strategy: Adapt to changing market conditions by refining your capital allocation strategy. 3️⃣ M&A Opportunities: Stay informed on market conditions and act swiftly on acquisition or divestiture opportunities. 4️⃣ Cost Optimization Metrics: Ensure the CFO and senior management collaborate with the CIO and CHRO to streamline IT spending and optimize office locations associated with future of work imperatives. 5️⃣ Boards must ensure the CFO and finance team have the necessary resources and support. 6️⃣ CEOs, CFOs, and boards need to focus on high-quality earnings and building sustainable business models for long-term survival.
