FY24 Tech & Data Job Market Update 📊 As we approach the end of the financial year, here's a quick snapshot of the current tech and data job market (in no particular order). - Many IT leaders have critical projects lined up including system upgrades and digital transformations, but are facing budget limitations. This often results in fewer job projects and related vacancies. - Hiring freezes are intensifying pressure on existing IT teams to deliver more with less, while needing to demonstrate quickly ROI. -Contractors are getting nervous, leaving engagements less than 3 months and opting for longer-term gigs for increased stability. - Some companies are shifting to outsourcing, creating a demand for consulting services. Firms like Tata Consultancy Services are actively hiring. -Some companies are getting the same or less budget than last year, which isn’t great news. -With the new financial year, there might be new budgets and potentially more roles. But don’t expect a flood of job postings on July 1. 🤗Hang in there! Stay proactive, target the right industries, and remain flexible regarding compensation, work from home arrangements, and role choices. -While the overall hiring rate may be lower, projects are still happening, companies are still recruiting. -If you're a job seeker, stay proactive, target the right industries, and be flexible. 💡Unemployment rates for select tech positions from the January 2024 BLS Data💡 Security analysts: 0.5% 🤯 Database administrators: 1.2% Network administrators: 1.5% Systems analysts: 1.5% Rates like these not only make it a tougher market to find qualified talent but increase the importance of retention strategies for those already in your organization. Skilled contractors can be a great option to keep work moving during what is now often a longer hiring cycle for many companies. These days, the requests I get for contract talent seem prompted by either a need to tackle a growing backlog or to help fight burnout within teams. Odd to say, but I actually thought Network admins would be lower than 1.5%. Anyone else surprised by these rates?

🔔WARNING🔔 Do you actually have time to hire on your own? ❌The Numbers Don't Lie❌ Bard, (now called Gemini) suggests it takes on average: 🎯10 hours of sourcing & screening to generate a good candidate 🎯A further 2 - 3 hours on in-depth screening 🎯Then 3 - 4 hours on interviewing 🎯And finally 2 - 4 hours closing a process This averages between 17 - 23 hours, and that does not account for the fact multiple candidates are needed as the ratio is never 1 to 1 (the average being 4 - 6 candidates to successfully make a hire) If your businesses is wanting / expecting / needing to hire just 1 highly skilled candidate (such as Software Engineer, Data Engineer, Head of Product etc.) then you must be able to afford someone in your business, who has sufficient skills and experience in active sourcing recruitment, to work fulltime for over 2 weeks if you expect a positive result. The reality is it costs your business more by not using expert help when hiring, than expecting your HR to be able to still complete their normal fulltime job function AND achieve in the hiring results you want.
