The NBA introduced NB-AI last week, giving us a look into the future of what watching an NBA game could look like.
So what is it?
At its heart is personalization for the individual.
Using generative AI models, fans will be able to transform an NBA game into a completely new viewing experience.
The example used at the tech summit was "movie mode" where an NBA game transformed into a Spider-Man-infused broadcast (picture below).
3 things to watch here:
1) We are at the "crawl" phase with this technology
It will not be perfect, but we are so early in how this technology will impact the industry.
It takes advancements like this, plus iteration, and adoption to create sustainable new fan experiences.
2) How will NB-AI develop?
The NBA made a splash last year with an augmented-reality demo where an individual was transformed into a live game highlight to display as if the person were the one playing in the game.
Since that demo, I haven't seen anything else on the tech.
So how will the NBA take steps to develop and bring NB-AI to market?
3) The unofficial "law of tech"
Usually follows a pattern of A) a ton of hype around what's possible B) to a "what's probable" correction then C) a level setting of what's sustainable.
I'll be curious to see where "AI" in general nets out across the industry.

One other note on AI because it's the buzzword of all buzzwords:
"AI" has been around for years, and the industry has already implemented use cases far before this newfound hype, but generative AI has created new functionalities that start to make these concepts more accessible to the mass market.
