Story time – How Datum became a software company 🚀: Datum started as a procurement services company. #Aerospace, #Defense, #Robotics, #Automotive, and #Medical companies relied on us for technical part-sourcing. Suddenly, we were handling supply chain ops for 30+ companies with a lean team. Challenges emerged, so we built solutions: 🔍 Supplier Management: Built a tool to assess supplier capabilities & performance. 📝 Requisition: Developed a Purchase Requisition form for streamlined demand capture. 📤 Quoting: Created an RFQ portal to eliminate inefficient email quoting. 📦 Order Tracking: Leveraged our portal to replace email and spreadsheet order tracking. 🔐 ITAR & Security: Moved all tools to GovCloud to handle restricted files securely. Our entire procurement business was now being run on a single platform. Service customers noticed our efficiency. They wanted our software for their own internal process. We extended an annual license to a select few. It worked. 📈 Customers saw reduced rogue spending, fewer suppliers, streamlined Design → On-Order timeline, improved on-time deliveries, reduced issue tickets, and more. That’s when we got serious about being a software company. We focused on integration partnerships, listened to customer feedback, and fully committed to building the best Procurement Management Platform (PMP) for hardware companies. While digital tools exist today, without a good user experience to encourage people to use them, they often sit to gather dust. This is especially true for spare parts and inventory management. In fact, many spare parts management tools are either incredibly difficult to use or understand without a significant amount of patience or training. This has inspired us to develop for a tool that isn’t just great at solving parts management problems but also easy to use. While user experience may not seem like a big deal for spare parts management, we believe it’s the reason why many current tools go unused. Our user research showed us that many Sparrow alternatives have overly complex user experiences. Complex UX means: users miss important information or enter partial data (e.g. when there are too many steps to complete a task). That's how complex UX can lead to major inaccuracies in data, which result in duplicate parts suboptimal parts planning strategies.
