I am excited to be working alongside Justice Necessary and Diane Cushman Neal, a passionate team that is helping Colorado neighbors access basic health and hygiene needs that assistance programs like SNAP and WIC don't cover. 💥Just last week, our bill, HB24-1164: Free Menstrual Products to Students, was introduced!💥 We are thrilled to be advocating for period products in Colorado public and charter schools. Did you know that 67% of students miss out on valuable school time because they don't have the period products they need? This legislation is more than just policy, it symbolizes a commitment to dignity and opportunity where period products are treated like other hygiene essentials. It asserts that access to essential products shouldn't hinge on chance or financial means. Let's join forces and support HB24-1164 to ensure that all students have access to the products they need. Did you know that nationwide, grandparents, other relatives, and close family friends are raising over 2.4 million children whose parents are unable to care for them? For almost 25 years, grandparents and other relatives have been included in the National Family Caregiver Support Program and the Native American Caregiver Support Program. These successful programs, which are overseen by the Administration for Community Living, provide for five categories of supportive services to grandparent and other relative caregivers aged 55+ raising children. States and Area Agencies On Aging can include these important caregivers in their aging plans, and we're providing them the tools to do just that! National Public Health Week Starts Today!! During each day of National Public Health Week, the MPH team has created a one pager that focuses on a particular public health topic. The purpose is to help to highlight how each of us can make a difference on that topic. These areas are critical to our future success in creating the healthiest nation. Think about what you can do to help. Please see below to learn more about Civic Engagement and my challenge to you. Civic engagement is the formal and informal actions that we and our communities take to identify and address problems and shapes our opportunities to be healthy. By taking actions to get more civically engaged, like voting, we exercise our right to make decisions about our communities, like whether our neighborhoods have walkable sidewalks and how much funding goes to nonprofit organizations to help vulnerable populations. By engaging in professional or community service we help to improve a community’s health. A recent analysis of civic engagement and state health outcomes from 1996 to 2020 showed that in states where people are more civically engaged and vote more, public health outcomes are better.   I challenge you to become more civically engaged! 1.    Vote and help someone else vote in the next election within your community (e.g. provide transportation or fill in for them at work). 2.    Volunteer in your community. 3.    Serve on a committee that affects the health of your community – contact your local schools, churches, non-profit groups, state public health organization for opportunities.   Share your experiences with family and friends!

When we see the lack of manners and respect for the elderly in younger generations. This is a common issue many people face today. Parents play a significant role in teaching children values like respect, empathy, and kindness. Here are some ways parents can encourage good manners and respect for the elderly: 1. Lead by example: Show respect to others, especially the elderly, in your daily interactions. 2. Teach empathy: Encourage children to put themselves in others' shoes and understand their feelings. 3. Practice good manners: Teach basic etiquette like saying "please," "thank you," and "excuse me." 4. Encourage volunteering: Engage children in activities that help the elderly, like visiting nursing homes or assisting seniors in their community. 5. Share stories: Talk to children about the experiences and challenges faced by the elderly, promoting understanding and appreciation. By instilling these values, parents can help raise respectful and compassionate children.

A bit of a late post, but I have to shout out the 30+ folks who attended our Big Reveal Event at the Deaconess Center for Child Well-Being! In case you missed it - Transform 314 implemented a campaign from August - October 2023 to help shape our 2024 advocacy priorities. We obtained feedback through surveys and Community Conversations. While we were open to hearing from ALL St. Louisans, we were intentionally working to engage a group that historically is not engaged in collective advocacy efforts - Black St. Louisans under the age of 45. 66% of the 488 participants that completed the survey identified as Black, with a majority of participants identifying as being under the age of 45 The top 5 issues Black participants expressed they were willing to advocate for were: #5: Increasing input on how money is spent in your community #4: Improving street safety #3: Improving access to quality and affordable food #2: Improving access to healthy and affordable housing AND addressing vacancy #1: Improving streets, sidewalks, lighting, etc. So...what's next? In 2024, Transform 314 will be advocating for improving the infrastructure in the City of St. Louis. We will work on this effort monthly at our Community Meetups, with the first one on Wednesday, Jan. 10th at 6pm at High Low (3301 Washington Ave - 63103).
