"New Shimmer is a floor wax AND a dessert topping!" That's from a Saturday Night Live skit in the mid 1970s. I think back to that skit whenever I see someone who tries to use their presentation slides as a handout and vice versa. It's as if they're saying, "It's a handout AND a presentation deck!" NO! A good presentation would be far too simple to be an effective handout. A good handout would be way too complicated to be good presentation slides. These two presentation aids serve very different purposes and should look and work very differently. Just as cleaning products look and work differently from whipped cream! #presentations #presentationskills #powerpoint

Carol Dweck's book, "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success," promotes the value of praise in creating a growth mindset. To do this, we want to praise someone's effort and/or process rather than praising the person. I've found that social media, and especially LinkedIn, is a good practice field for this. If someone in your network posts about a successful project they've managed, rather than saying something like, "You've always been a good project manager" (person praise), post something like, "I've noticed how vigilant you are at making sure everyone on the project team is communicated with regularly about their goals and milestones" (process/effort praise). The more you practice it here, the easier it may become elsewhere!

Several years ago I attended a workshop on organizational learning. The leader said: "There are two lies of communication: 1. What I say is what you hear 2. What you hear is what I say." Both of these are untrue but we believe otherwise. Communication is challenging. Assuming that what you said is what was heard is often integral to MIScommunication!
