#SpaceX Lands $843M #NASA Contract to De-Orbit #ISS by 2030 #NASA has selected #SpaceX to develop a spacecraft to de-orbit the #InternationalSpaceStation (ISS) by 2030, awarding a contract valued at up to $843 million. The #ISS is approaching the end of its operational life, and with new, commercially owned space stations on the horizon, the original space station will need to be safely decommissioned at the decade's end. NASA has clarified that this new #US Deorbit Vehicle will be different from SpaceX's Dragon capsule, which currently delivers cargo and crew to the ISS. Unlike other SpaceX-built and operated vehicles, NASA will take ownership of the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle after its development and will manage it throughout its mission. The vehicle and the ISS are expected to destructively break up upon re-entry into the atmosphere, and SpaceX’s critical task will be ensuring this re-entry does not endanger populated areas. Previously, NASA and its international partners had considered using a #Russian Roscosmos Progress spacecraft for the de-orbit mission. However, studies concluded that a new spacecraft would be necessary for the maneuver. The safe decommissioning of the ISS is a shared responsibility among the five space agencies involved: #NASA, the #CanadianSpaceAgency, the #EuropeanSpaceAgency, the #JapanAerospaceExplorationAgency, and #Roscosmos. It remains unclear if the $843 million contract is being funded by all participating countries. It all comes down to the fact that the technology for the Moon and Mars are not being developed on the principles of product design, development process and integration but from the old systems engineering principles that are outdated, obsolete, and not relevant for tomorrow’s problems. Hence that quote stated above.

I’m sad to say it’s not gonna happen. Far too many variables that are not locked down - some not even built - let alone in develpoment or testing. More delays will happen periodically. ✅ BREAKING – On Tuesday, SpaceX launched its historic Polaris Dawn mission – a bold orbital expedition that will send civilians into the highly radioactive region of space and allow them to conduct the first-ever spacewalk by non-professional astronauts. The capsule lifted off early in the morning on a Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A key moment of the journey is scheduled for Thursday: the first-ever spacewalk by civilians, outfitted in sleek, newly designed SpaceX EVA suits featuring visor displays, helmet cameras, and an advanced joint mobility system. SpaceX has planned the spacewalk for 06:23 GMT on Thursday, with a backup window on Friday at the same time. Since the Crew Dragon capsule lacks an airlock, the entire crew will be exposed to the vacuum of space during the spacewalk, with two members tethered to the spacecraft. In addition to the spacewalk, the crew will test laser satellite communication between the spacecraft and the Starlink satellite constellation, aiming to enhance space communication speeds. "NASA has been a leader of space exploration for decades, being the only organization to put humans on the moon. As part of their Artemis missions, for the first time in over 50 years, NASA hopes to repeat that feat and put a human on the moon in 2026. One of the biggest differences this time: the private sector is helping them do it. In addition to major companies, like Boeing (BA) and Lockheed Martin (LMT), one of the businesses assisting in NASA’s mission is SpaceX. The private company, co-founded by Elon Musk, introduced a new commercial era of space exploration. In 2023 SpaceX executed 96 successful missions, launching a rocket on average every four days. There are many companies following SpaceX’s lead. Yahoo Finance got an inside look at one of those businesses: Firefly Aerospace. Firefly is also playing a role in NASA’s mission as part of the $2.6 billion Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, aimed at developing reliable transportation options to the moon for supplies and research. Later this year, Firefly will be the third American company to attempt an unmanned lunar landing with their Blue Ghost spacecraft.
