Empress Irene on this day, August 15, in the year 797, had her son Constantine VI, blinded and so became the first woman in Byzantine history to rule the empire entirely on her own. Leo IV had made his son, Constantine VI, coregent. After Leo's death, Constantine VI ruled alone for a short time, but after a stinging defeat by Arabs and Bulgars in 791, he brought in his mother as joint ruler in January 792. Lest you are feeling sympathy for the young Constantine, after another Bulgar thrashing in July, he vented his ire on his five uncles, having one blinded and cutting out the tongues of the other four. Two years after having blinded Constantine, Irene also had the eyes of his four younger brothers put out. Nicephorus, her finance minister deposed her in 802, eventually banishing her to the island of Lesbos where she died on 9 August 803. https://lnkd.in/eEpT3CPK

Some “old school” politics. And we think it gets weird these days. Thank you for posting!
