"The Ministers concurred that the People’s Republic of #China (PRC)’s foreign policy seeks to reshape the international order for its own benefit at the expense of others. They highlighted that the PRC employs political, economic, and military coercion of countries, companies, and civil society, as well as facilitates its military modernization through the diversion of technology to achieve these objectives. Such behavior is a serious concern to the Alliance and the entire international community and represents the greatest strategic challenge in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond." Both Pacific alliances (U.S.- and Sino-centric) have recently conducted extensive military drills. #Japan #Korea #Taiwan #Russia #Ukraine #Israel https://lnkd.in/eXTWxvhH

The deepening partnerships between *India-Russia and China-Russia* present diplomatic challenges and strategic implications for NATO's global influence. India's defense cooperation with Russia, underscored by significant military acquisitions and joint exercises, complicates *NATO's efforts to maintain influence in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.* Similarly, China's alignment with Russia in opposing Western sanctions and advocating for multipolar global governance poses a formidable challenge to NATO's diplomatic strategies. https://lnkd.in/gPAqfD6n

Hello folks 😊 , sharing my newly published article in The Manila Times entitled, - “US Missile Deployment and $500M military Aid to PH: Defensive or Offensive Posturing?” Feel free to share! Have a nice weekend to all!! 😊 ❤️ 🙏 ….LAST July 30, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III dropped by Manila for the Philippines-US 2+2 ministerial dialogue, the fourth such talks since it began in 2012. This is unprecedented because it's the first time that talks have been held in Manila. Indeed, the PH-US 2+2 dialogue has set the stage for continued and expanded military cooperation, reflecting a strengthened military and defense alliance between the two sides. Before visiting Manila, the two US officials also held talks in Tokyo with their counterpart top Japanese defense and diplomatic officials on July 28 to bolster military and defense cooperation. Obviously, the US-Philippine 2+2 dialogue and the US-Japanese meetings are intended to strengthen US alliances and partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region. These are significant steps by the US in bolstering military and diplomatic ties. This is part of the broader US counterbalance and containment strategy against China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. This agenda underscores the intricate and often unstated geopolitical maneuvering that shapes the current dynamics in the region and aligns with US paranoia while grappling with the reality that it's losing its hegemony in the region…. My latest in the China-US Focus. I argue that although China's relations with the Arab Gulf States are expanding, a major obstacle stands in the way. China shuns military alliances, whereas the Arab Gulf States have heavily relied on external security guarantees since their independence. This significant gap in the national strategies of the two sides will prevent the relationship from advancing into higher geopolitical realms, limiting cooperation to secondary areas in an era of shifting power centers. From the Pentagon to the Philippines, integrating deterrence in the Indo-Pacific By Kevin M. Wheeler Aug 13, 2024 The United States and its Indo-Pacific allies must work together across all levels and domains for their regional deterrence to be effective. All the components contributing to defense need to work together to be effective. Traditional measures of military strength, such as the number of servicemembers, ships, and tanks available, count for little if they cannot operate together and be sustained. This integration must happen across several areas, including: Integration to reinforce and balance Joint Force and ally capabilities. Integration across multiple spectrums of conflict to sustain military operations posturing. Integration of capabilities across terrestrial with non-terrestrial domains. Deterrence is and will continue to be a team effort. The United States and its allies and partners must work together across all levels, from meetings among top-level officials to servicemembers on the ground helping teach close-quarter battle tactics. Success will be measured by maintaining order, under a structure agreed to by multiple nations as equals, benefiting as many peoples as possible.

Partnership with NATO in peace and security with Ireland’s unique Geopolitical, Defence and Policy overview. Now there is an Individually Tailored Partnership Programme (ITPP) agreement with Nato to counter potential mutual external threats to the undersea infrastructure, 75% of all trans-Atlantic undersea cables pass through or near Irish waters. Ireland is not the long soft underbelly of mainland Europe from an Russian attack, Scandinavia along with all Eastern Europe and Ukraine is. Ireland is an Island Nation at the end of Europe, a natural defence along with it’s distance away, makes it logistically very difficult and dubious if sufficient Russian Land, Sea or Air power would survive in such an attack attempt, it would be apocalyptic for All involved, academic, an abysmal failure with NATO’s deterrence & defence. NATO may be seriously weakened should Trump makes good to take USA out of NATO if elected President as some NATO members do not pay their share. Russian Federation Military performance in Ukraine coupled with it’s losses in manpower & material makes an conventional attack on NATO Countries less likely at present, also the NATO response on Land, Sea, Air and the Nuclear deterent would be overwhelmingly. The risks are real nevertheless. Republic of Ireland, Austria and Malta are the only Military Neutral member States left in the EU. Ireland’s policy of military neutrality has long been an important strand of our independent foreign policy and is characterised by non-membership of military alliances or common or mutual defence arrangements. NATO fully respects Ireland's choice to maintain its neutrality and that respect is the foundation of our entire partnership", highlighted the Chair on his recent visit to Ireland. The Chair of the Military Committee is NATO's senior military officer, by virtue of being the principal military adviser to the Secretary General and the conduit through which consensus-based advice from the Chiefs of Defence of all NATO member countries is brought forward to the political decision-making bodies of NATO. Also the UK faces a back-door threat from the growing Iranian, Russian and Chinese presence in the Republic of Ireland. These risks are compounded by the outlier Republic’s reluctance to invest sufficiently in its military and security apparatus to deal with internal and external security threats, pressure is likely to be applied on the Irish Government. In a recent Irish poll, asked if they support the Irish State's current model of military neutrality or if they would like to see it change, 61 per cent of voters said they favoured the current model, while just more than a quarter (26 per cent) said they would like to see it change. A total of 13 per cent of respondents expressed no opinion,17 Jun 2023. Also the North part of the Island of Ireland is in NATO. Analysis of NATO's relevance and importance from a human rights perspective: 1. Protection of Human Rights: NATO's primary mission of collective defense aims to protect the human rights of its member states' citizens by deterring and defending against external threats. By maintaining peace and stability, NATO helps prevent conflicts that could result in human rights abuses, such as forced displacement, violence, and loss of life. 2. Support for Democratic Values: NATO's commitment to democracy and the rule of law aligns with the promotion and protection of human rights. The alliance's partnerships with countries in the Indo-Pacific region, for example, aim to foster democratic governance, respect for human rights, and adherence to international norms. By supporting democratic transitions and strengthening democratic institutions, NATO contributes to the protection of human rights globally. 3. Humanitarian Assistance: NATO's involvement in humanitarian operations, such as providing aid and support during natural disasters or refugee crises, demonstrates its commitment to protecting human rights. For instance, NATO's support for Ukraine during the ongoing conflict has included humanitarian assistance, helping to alleviate the suffering of civilians affected by the conflict. 4. Upholding International Law: NATO's actions are guided by international law, including human rights law. The alliance's adherence to the principles of proportionality, necessity, and distinction in its military operations helps prevent unnecessary harm to civilians and ensures the protection of human rights during armed conflicts. 5. Promotion of Gender Equality: NATO has made significant strides in promoting gender equality within its own ranks and in its operations. The alliance's Gender Advisory Team works to integrate gender perspectives into NATO's policies, operations, and training, recognizing that gender equality is essential for sustainable peace and the protection of human rights. 6. Accountability and Transparency: NATO's commitment to accountability and transparency helps ensure that human rights are respected and protected. The alliance's mechanisms for reporting, investigating, and addressing allegations of human rights abuses by its forces contribute to upholding human rights standards. #TransatlanticUnity #NATOPartnerships #PeaceThroughStrength #NATOSupportUkraine #NATOGlobalPartners #NATODeterrence

NATO's Relevance and Importance in the Global Security Landscape Introduction: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has been a cornerstone of global security since its inception in 1949. In recent years, the alliance has faced new challenges, including Russia's war in Ukraine and China's growing influence. This report aims to analyze NATO's relevance and importance in the current global security landscape, focusing on its role in preventing war, supporting Ukraine, and fostering global partnerships. Preventing War: NATO's primary purpose is to prevent war through credible deterrence and strong defense. The alliance's ability to maintain peace in Europe during the Cold War and its renewed focus on collective defense since 2014 demonstrate its effectiveness in deterring potential aggressors. NATO's increased military readiness, enhanced training, and improved equipment have strengthened its deterrence posture, ensuring that its deterrence remains credible and its defenses are robust. This approach has successfully prevented any imminent risk of a military attack against NATO members. Supporting Ukraine: Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has highlighted the need for NATO's support. NATO has provided significant military aid to Ukraine, including ammunition, air defenses, and training. This support has played a crucial role in Ukraine's ability to defend itself against Russian aggression. At the upcoming Washington summit, NATO leaders are expected to agree on having NATO lead the coordination of security assistance and training for Ukraine, making the support more transatlantic and reducing the burden on the United States. This increased support aims to bring an end to the war in Ukraine by demonstrating to Russia that it cannot wait out NATO's support for Ukraine. Stoltenberg, J. (2024). Brilliant analysis as always Erin, Gregory and CSIS team. Correct to highlight that deepening strategic alignment is the result of Chinese coercion; even more important to highlight that economic security is national security and key for governments to be able to stand up to Beijing. "By investing in the Philippines’ infrastructure, digital economy, critical minerals, semiconductor supply chains, and more, Japan and the US show that their commitment is deep, abiding, and not just contingent on maritime tensions with China. [...] And by helping the Philippines continue its strong economic performance and avoid overreliance on China, Washington and Tokyo will help Manila minimize its exposure to Chinese economic retaliation." And great to see that the Philippines is projected to be the first- or second-fastest-growing economy in Asia for at least the next two years!
Gregory Poling and I write about the recent #trilateral summit, a manifestation of the importance of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy, which emphasizes both #military and #economic security in cooperation with partners and allies. https://lnkd.in/eygqCWPk Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) #philippines #japan #us
