As a writer and (occasional) speaker, I love language. Dame Judi Dench is reciting a sonnet I've read before here; it didn't sound like that when I read it, I can tell you that much. And I read a lot of poetry. Take 5 minutes and listen. And if you're looking for a moral in today's post, it would be this: you can have the best idea or raw material in the world, but the real magic lies in the execution. https://lnkd.in/gA_9arT4

Good insights. AI search is still largely at the fringe, even if it seems anecdotally more popular depending on who you interact with.

NEW research: https://lnkd.in/guv-hZ7U — Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, CoPilot... If your LinkedIn feed looks anything like mine, you could be forgiven for thinking that these AI tools must be hurting Google's market share, or at least the number of searches each month. That's why I'm deeply grateful there's new research from Datos, A Semrush Company and Sonata Insights showing exactly how, where, and whether Google's being disrupted by AI search. The most telling data point to me? 99% of AI search users still use Google just as much as before 🤯🤔

Campari is bitter, foreign and not particularly approachable. So how do you sell it to a market that's unlikely to like it? Lean into what makes it unique. There's a person out there for every product. If you're a Campari, be Campari, not Jack Daniels. Don't try to appeal to the broadest possible audience. Find your "tribe," as Seth Godin would say.

Legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog keeps his shooting process lean. He doesn't believe in "shooting coverage," or keeping multiple cameras rolling all the time to "create" a film in the editing room. Why? He believes "shooting coverage" speaks to a lack of purpose. "[Young filmmakers] just keep the camera rolling, rolling, rolling, rolling, and they end up with 650 hours of footage," says Herzog in this 2017 interview. "And it's all mediocre. You cannot find any gems in an ocean of mediocrity, so they are doomed." "Be selective. Do what you really need for the screen. A film like 'Into the Abyss' ... I didn't shoot more than 6 or 8 hours of footage for an almost two hour film." "That's an incredible ratio," says the interviewer. "No, it's the right thing. The correct ratio, as it should be," retorts Herzog. There are obviously differences of opinion (many other legendary filmmakers DO shoot coverage), but Herzog's point is key to creating great content. Great content creators go in with a plan. They know the message they want to convey, and they know how they want to convey it. Sure, some things might change as the content is built, but without a plan, you're trying to "find gems in an ocean of mediocrity." Don't just "shoot for coverage." Create intentional content. https://lnkd.in/g3XJFFEv

"How are you turning a profit?" That surprised question is one I've asked several small eCommerce sellers lately; it prompted this article. Big eCommerce platforms provide a ton of value for sellers -- they offer visibility and make it easy to get started selling. But as they solidify their market position, the costs start to go up (just witness TikTok raising their fees three times in the space of a year). Don't get caught off guard by hidden eCommerce costs. Understand what they're getting from YOU. Then begin building your own audience that isn't reliant on them.
It's easy to start selling products online with a platform like Amazon, Instagram or Etsy. But behind that ease of use are some hidden costs that might surprise you. The big eCommerce platforms aren't your friends. And if you haven't considered the pros and cons of using one of them as your main source of online product revenue, you ought to now. In this slide deck, we explain what you really need to know about online eCommerce with the major online retail platforms. Read it here:

Internet Shaquille is one of my favorite creators to come on the scene in the last several years. He produces cooking videos with a refreshing lack of frills and fuss. No crazy production value, no long, meandering stories, just value. In a world of selling out, he's managed to stay himself and STILL make a good living, and I love that. If you're a creator looking to turn your hobbies into something that makes money, this Karat interview with him is gold. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gw4NT7BA

10moAI can do a lot of things, but most of the people saying it's going to replace human creativity are philistines who probably wouldn't get why this is transcendent. It might be a smaller slice, but there'll always be a place for human creativity.
