🍓🍷#Flavonoids including berries, tea and red wine 😀 could lower the risk of #dementia by 28% Age and genetics remain the biggest risk factors, but experts say almost half of cases could be prevented or delayed and there is mounting evidence that diet could play a role. As published in the journal JAMA Network Open, this study led by Queen's University Belfast analysed dietary data from over 120,000 adults aged between 40 and 70 years from the UK Biobank, with findings showing that consuming 6 additional servings of flavonoid-rich foods per day was associated with a 28% lower risk of dementia. The findings were most noticeable in individuals with a high genetic risk, as well as in those with symptoms of #depression. Read in full ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ewSvGvx9

🦾 A 50-surgery milestone using AI-powered surgical platform Paradigm is completed! Proprio’s Paradigm platform is a new sensing modality that aids surgeons in the operating room while recording data to fuel a breakthrough digital twin capability, modelling the potential results of key decisions, as well as providing an opportunity to gather critical data to radically improve the practice of surgery. Led by Dr. Rick Bransford, spine surgeon and clinical educator at the University of Washington Medical Center, who explains that: “This system’s unprecedented visualisation and data collection capabilities offer a level of precision far beyond previous methods. 🦍🎋💊 Self-medicating gorillas may hold clues to future drug discovery Researchers in Gabon studied tropical plants eaten by wild gorillas and used by local human healers, identifying four with medicinal effects. Laboratory studies revealed the plants were high in #antioxidants and #antimicrobials. One showed promise in fighting superbugs, with their bark used in traditional medicine to treat everything from stomach complaints to #infertility, containing chemicals with medicinal effects, from #phenols to #flavonoids. They selected four trees that were likely to be beneficial, based on interviews with local healers: the fromager tree, giant yellow mulberry, African teak and fig trees. All four plants showed antibacterial activity against at least one multidrug-resistant strain of the bug, E. coli. https://lnkd.in/eHB6SxMN
