It's time to bust one of the most damaging myths about solar PV: that the technology has a major waste problem. A recent report in Nature shows convincingly that the cumulative waste generated by fossil fuel processes and other sources is orders of magnitude larger than solar PV waste. The authors also show how the pervasiveness of this myth has slowed solar PV deployment in places where it's most needed. We should of course, strive for circularity and minimize environmental impacts of all technologies. https://lnkd.in/eisXvERT #climatescience #renewableenergy #power #solar #solarpv #circularity #energydata #transition #energytransition #sustainability #netzero #fossilfuels #myths

This is confusing. for example, how can you separate plastic waste from municipal waste?

The focus on debunking the myth of solar PV waste is crucial in promoting its adoption as a sustainable energy solution.  However, it is worth considering the carbon footprint of Chinese solar panels and the geopolitical implications surrounding the energy transition.  As the world transitions towards renewable energy, understanding the full environmental, social, and geopolitical becomes increasingly important.

David of course we need to go 100% renewable, asap. The “waste” argument shouldn’t be used to slow down the PV deployement. But we have a design issue - our renewable infrastructure must be circular. It’s not just about waste, it’s about the critical minerals and metals needed for production too. We have a unique opportunity to get it right, and we can’t afford not to.

This is VERY valuable and important information. BUT, I'm not at all surprised by the finding that "the cumulative waste generated by fossil fuel processes and other sources is orders of magnitude larger than solar PV waste". OF COURSE it is: just think of the mountains of toxic slag a coal-fired electric power plant produces every day it's in operation. The myth that "solar PV.... has a major waste problem" is absurd on its face: yes, there will be some waste by-products in the process of producing solar cells -- but the cells, once manufactured, produce power for DECADES while producing ZERO waste. I strongly suspect that the absurd myth that "solar PV.... has a major waste problem" is just a toxic by-product of the massively-funded fossil-fuel industry propaganda machine.

The insights shared in your post shed light on a significant misconception surrounding solar PV technology. It's reassuring to see data from a reputable source like Nature debunking the myth and presenting a more accurate comparison with the waste generated from fossil fuel processes. The point about how such myths can hinder solar PV deployment in crucial areas is particularly eye-opening. 🌿 Advancing towards circularity and minimizing environmental impacts are indeed imperative steps for all technologies.

The whole reason solar PV exists is to reduce GHG emissions and provide a renewable source of energy. We all know disposal of solar PV is a lot less waste in terms of volume then other waste streams but the other waste streams are by-products of running current society that are not marketing themselves as sources of renewable energy. Agree we should strive for circularity and minimize environmental impacts of all technologies but we also need to know the embodied carbon and disposal cycle of all renewable technologes to ensure we are making informed smart decisions about where to deploy these technologies. Hi David Carlin pv cells & systems are also robust, allowing them to be repaired, refurbished and redeployed, all extending their life potentially more than other product / ewaste streams. Absolutely! It's crucial to debunk misconceptions that can hinder the adoption and acceptance of sustainable technologies like solar PV. While no energy source is without its challenges, it's essential to have a balanced perspective based on factual data. This report in Nature provides valuable insights, underscoring the comparative environmental benefits of solar PV over fossil fuels. As the energy landscape transitions, it's our collective responsibility to ensure that our decisions are informed by accurate information. Kudos for shedding light on this topic! 🌞🌍 #InformedDecisions #SustainableFuture
