The Ruger Mini-14 and the Ruger SR15 (AR15 clone) are the same rifle on different frames. Neither are sold to the public as full-auto weapons. The Mini-14 is legal just about everywhere, whereas the SR15 is being banned as an "assault rifle" in most jurisdictions. The legal definition of an assault rifle varies by state, but it generally refers to semi-automatic rifles that can accept detachable magazines and possess specific features. These features may include a folding or telescopic stock, a pistol grip, or a flash suppressor - all of which are available for both the Mini-14 and SR 15 firearms. The "assault rifle" designation and resulting ban are based on nothing but appearance differences, not enhanced capabilities. One looks like a hunting rifle, the other looks like a military-grade service weapon. However, just like momma use to say, "Looks can be deceiving."

With nearly 1 billion detachable magazines in circulation, for both rifles and pistols, they are unquestionably commonly-owned and commonly-used for lawful firearm use, including recreational target shooting, hunting and self-defense. They are “arms” within the meaning of the Second Amendment. While I love plinking with iron sights, not running an optic on their #Guns in 2024 is much more about sending a message to others than accurately sending lead downrange (que the “bUt dA eMp gOnNa kIlL yUr oPtIcS!” crowd).   But even the best optics can fail & batteries die at the worst moment (which is why I prefer actual scopes over red-dots, but that’s a topic for another day). Thus I would argue that any rifle intended as a service rifle for #Police or #LawEnforcement, #SelfDefense, zombies, or warding off hordes of #Russian paratroopers as in the 1984 documentary film Red Dawn; needs to have iron sights on it.   But iron sights are rather useless if you can’t immediately employ them or require a tool to remove the optic.   Here we have the Ruger Firearms SFAR I use as a pig #Hunting rifle, #London Metropolitan Police MP5 clone, Army M4 clone with Aimpoint Inc. CCO (yes, I have 2 select-fire M4 clones one with CCO & one with ACOG), and my Zombocalypse rifle.   I didn’t bother with iron sights on the Ruger. As a hunting rifle for my ranch here in South #Texas, if the Primary Arms, LLC optic somehow fails, it’s not a big deal. I’ll just go back to the house to get another gun. If I were going on some extreme backwoods and/or dangerous game, if would be a different calculation.   On the MP-5, the B&T mount with the EOTECH optic obscures the iron sights. Compounding the problem is that the optic needs a hex wrench to be removed. So if your battery dies, the shooter is pretty much SOL on using the weapon. As I’ve said many times, I hate this setup so much that I had to clone it. But it does work great for rabbit hunting!   On the M4, the wretched MaTech BUIS (or the primary sights if you’re the profiles in cluelessness of Army ROTC (Official Page) & many United States Army Reserve “leaders”), if the Aimpoint CCO fails, the rear sight can be immediately flipped-up up & put to use. Though I loathe the specifics of this BUIS, the ability to be employed without removing the optic is a huge plus.   On my Zombocalypse rifle, if the EoTech 1-10x LPVO somehow fails, it has a QD mount to quickly remove it so I can use the LMT Defense BUIS. I see this as a less than ideal setup for #Shooting, as it will take a minute to transition to the BUIS. But it’s better than nothing.   Some folks elect to go with a red-dot on an LPVO in leu of or in addition to the BUIS. I personally don’t like this as it adds bulk to the rifle & is another thing to fail. But such a setup does work great with the primary optics in place & can be used to assist in quick transitions to targets.
