🇪🇺 The recent report published by Europol provides valuable insights into the most menacing criminal #networks operating within the #EU. ✅ #Europol categorized the primary forms of criminal activity that these networks engage in: 1. #Drug trafficking 2. #Frauds (online fraud schemes, excise fraud, VAT fraud) 3. Organised property #crime (organised burglaries and thefts, motor vehicle crime) 4. #Migrant smuggling 5. Trafficking in human beings (#THB) 6. #Cyberattacks 7. Environmental crime 8. Extortion and racketeering 9. Firearms trafficking What the numbers show: ❌ Drug trafficking stands out as a critical activity – 50 % of the most threatening criminal networks are involved in drug trafficking, either standalone or as part of a portfolio of activities. 36 % have a unique focus on drug trafficking. ❌ 86 % can infiltrate legal #businesses to disguise their activities and launder #criminal profits. 34 % of the most threatening criminal networks have been active for over ten years. ❌ 71 % of networks engage in #corruption to facilitate criminal activity or obstruct #lawenforcement or judicial proceedings. ❌ 68% use violence. But it does not stop there, an illegal trafficking route for drugs can be used to traffick people, weapons and money. Regarding the events in France: assault on prison convoy in France, narco-boss escapes. Two agents killed, huge manhunt across the north of the country. Why is there such surprise and astonishment? Why didn't people realise what could have happened? We have been talking for a long time about organised crime, the spread of drugs, but then we stop at so many conferences, reports without listening to the police, the experts, the investigators in the field. It also happens in Italy. Many talk, few understand, even fewer actually work. Wielding guns, killing policemen sounds like the Italy of the 1990s when mafias went unpunished. We have come a long way and reacted. The first danger to avoid now is rhetoric. It is not only force that is needed. I am aware that using the anti-mafia code for crimes would also be very useful in France and Europe. But action involving civil society is needed. Do the French know what the mafia is? Do they deal with it? Or is it just youth gangs? What are the gaps in society that produce these phenomena? All the drugs circulating in France, what voids do they fill? And above all, what support do these crimes enjoy? The attack was planned with too many details, who helped? This is the time for intelligent reaction as well as manhunting. This is the time for in-depth analysis rather than cosmetic anti-mafia. This story does not end with a capture but has raised the level of confrontation. Police forces across the region have seized drugs and weapons and helped safeguard more than 100 people during a week-long operation targeting #countylines drugs gangs County Lines is the term used to describe #drug dealing where mobile phones are used to supply illicit substances from larger metropolitan areas to towns and rural areas. The lines are run by ‘line holders’, with 'runners' - often vulnerable people and children - delivering the drugs. It's an incredibly damaging area of criminality which has direct links to serious #violence and #exploitation, along with the harm caused by the drugs being sold. Regional county lines coordinator DI Kelly Gray said: “County lines activity impacts some of the most vulnerable people in society, which is why we continue to target those responsible by disrupting their illicit activities. “Forces across the region work tirelessly throughout the year not just apprehending the criminals behind these deal lines, but also through close working with partner agencies to provide support and safeguarding to those being exploited. “The latest intensification period has led to some significant seizures of drugs and weapons, which once again highlights the scale of criminality and how it’s intrinsically linked to crime such as drug dealing, serious violence, and even modern slavery." 🇪🇨⚡️ — Daniel Noboa and the Bukele Effect: Ecuador’s operations against crime have already resulted in the arrest of more than nine thousand individuals, according to information from local authorities. ⚠️ The country has been experiencing a situation of internal armed conflict for over 40 days, declared by President Daniel Noboa, who ordered security forces to dismantle the criminal organizations linked to drug trafficking operating in the country. During this period, among the 9,040 individuals who have been arrested, around 241 have been formally charged with terrorism offenses ✔️ The operations against gangs, which involve the participation of the Armed Forces and the Police, have resulted in the recapture of 34 of the 90 inmates who had escaped from prisons earlier in the year, the seizure of over 62 tons of drugs, nearly three thousand firearms, more than 12 thousand explosives, and over $220,000 in cash. ❗️ Furthermore, authorities also claim to have normalized the situation in prisons, where around 200 hostages were held by inmates in January and now free. ➡️ Ecuador, which experienced a wave of violence in January, received support from the United States, which entered into a five-year security assistance agreement, including the provision of weapons, technology, and training. The country currently has one of the highest homicide rates in Latin America, with 45 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023.
