#28 Animal Planet 🌏 :  "No SHT Act" Aims to Flush Out Fecal Feed in US Farms In a shocking revelation that's stirring up a stink in the agricultural world, US Democratic Senator Cory Booker has introduced groundbreaking legislation aimed at eliminating a stomach-churning practice: feeding animal excrement to livestock. The aptly named "No Stools in Herds' Troughs Act" (NO SHT Act) takes aim at the controversial practice of adding chicken litter to cattle feed, a common occurrence in large-scale US feedlots and dairies. This practice, already banned in the UK and Canada, has raised alarming public health concerns, especially in light of the recent spread of avian influenza to dairy cows. Key points of the NO SHT Act: 1️⃣ Prohibits intentionally adding excrement to animal feed 2️⃣ Bans manufacturing or selling animal feed containing excrement Senator Booker didn't mince words: "We must put an end to unsanitary factory farming practices that prioritize profits over public health. Feeding animal waste to livestock is irresponsible and cruel." The bill has garnered support from a flock of scientific experts: Dr. Steve Van Winden (Royal Veterinary College, UK) linked the practice to botulism in cattle and H5N1 risk Dr. Brian Ferguson (University of Cambridge) highlighted the potential for fecal-oral transmission of avian flu Bill Bullard (CEO of RCALF) and Michael Kovach (Pennsylvania Farmers Union) emphasized the need to stop this "egregious and ill-advised practice" As this legislation moves through the political pipeline, it's clear that the NO SHT Act is no laughing matter. Tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through improved animal health and welfare to ensure food security When: 18.07.2024, 12:15 CEST Where: Online or Red Room (FAO Headquarters, Rome) With more than 1.3 billion people relying on livestock for their livelihoods and food security there is an urgent need to prioritize actions and policies targeting agriculture induced antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Improved animal health and welfare plays an important role in reducing the need for antibiotics and promoting responsible use. With the FAO RENOFARM initiative launched and the UNGA High-Level Meeting on AMR set for September, it is important to examine effective and humane pathways to better manage this silent epidemic. We will discuss this crucial topic at a side event organised by Compassion in World Farming, during the Second Session of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG), Sub-Committee on Livestock, at the FAO Headquarters. Ohio instructional guide now available for HPAI in dairy To further protect the U.S. livestock industry from the threat posed by highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, USDA is sharing a number of actions to help get ahead of this disease and limit its spread. USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced a Federal Order requiring the following measures, effective Monday, April 29, 2024. The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) has published an Ohio Instructional Guide to help dairy farmers comply with USDA’s Federal Order to limit the spread of HPAI in dairy cattle. Requirements for movement of dairy cattle are outlined in the guide, which is posted at the bottom of ODA’s Dairy Cattle web page.
