During my first year of college (not sure I want to admit how many years ago that was...) I took an archery course as my PE elective. It is a great sport that really helps with concentration and confidence, and can be a lot of fun (did you watch the amazing archery competitions at the #Olympics?). On Conscious Leadership and feeling safe... Feeling safe to express, be seen and heard, and to try new things is essential for us as conscious leaders and those we lead. (physically and emotionally safe!) We want to create for positive impact and this cannot happen from a place of fear (Again, both for the leader and the led). As Conscious Leaders, we know the importance of being grounded and knowing when to ground. We know how to recognize when we are centered and safe, and how to create that space for those we are leading. On this Conscious Leadership expedition that I lead, here are some ways that we intentionally create a feeling of safety: * Sharing our own leadership stories, vulnerability moments included * Holding online meetups before the trip to facilitate relationship building * Discussing the value of morning rituals * Sharing and forming agreements for our ways of being as a group * Checking in on energy levels and comfort levels as we do new activities * Teaching practices for getting centered and regulating the nervous system * Openly sharing the knowns and unknowns for the journey * Telling the truth A container like this trip is an ideal way to have the experience of how much growth, discovery, and collaboration can happen when we feel safe. There is no building that is started and completed in one day , it will surely spell collosal doom. Building any house of any sort requires patience and peserveance .While building, the builder needs to use enduring materials that will last and endure different weather conditions, be they favorable or otherwise. Building requires a process of time ; it is one block at a time . Have you watched the mason lay the blocks ? He lays it , and with the mortar , makes sure it’s aligned , and dresses the block by removing excess motar , then he lays another block, and then another . As you build relevance in career and development, be patient , but consistent with the process . #mission #vision #values #leadingsystems #leadershipimpact Why are defined and stated mission/ vision/ values important for an organization? Every organization stands with a promise to each of its stakeholders. The promise to: - The Customers to provide a product or service that will serve their needs. - The Investors that this will be done profitably so that those who have believed in the promise get a return on their investment. Now and in the future. - The Society that the organization will do its business in a socially responsible way. - The employees that their experience will be as what is shared before and during the hiring. These promises are typically what Mission, Vision and Values are an articulation of. Leaders at each level across the organization are the custodians, torch bearers, role models and accountable for living these promises. Rest what we do as creating strategy, plans, KPIs, actual actions and governance are all to ensure that the promises are delivered. From Board meetings, quarterly/ monthly/ weekly reviews to individual performance management, a few questions that must be asked: 1. What are our promises? 2. Are we living them? Each day? 3. Is each person living them? 4. How well? What is good/ What needs to be done differently? 5. Challenges will be there. Are our actions aligned to the promises while facing them? What comes in the way? There is a long list out there and it keeps growing. But a few fundamental ones prevail: 1. Lack of clarity about the promises (need to define them sharply and keep discussing them often so that these are clear to all and relevant to the times). 2. Egos and vested interests (If self becomes bigger than the promises, then that needs to be checked as it ends up poisoning the entire system). 3. Incompetence/ bad attitude (Bad hiring/ no development? Leaders and employees need to co-own this). 4. Breakdown of communication and relationships (Is it ego? Is it personality differences? Ironically, the best solution is to communicate. That's the lifeline for human relationships. Longer the gap, the more effort it takes to bridge it). As per systems thinking, everything is interconnected and interdependent. Yet, if one is to hold one aspect that can make all the difference to everything stated above - it is the leaders and the leadership displayed. Can one aspect change the entire system?
