If you want to foster depth on your team, you need to understand that team depth is defined by the abilities of your entire team, beyond your strongest players.
John Maxwell has written about this in the below blog. Enjoy.

Another amazing Hammond Brothers Construction retreat! What's even cooler is that this year we met at the property they dreamed up just two short years ago. Inspiring! If you or your team needs a retreat like this, reach out.

Just wrapped up another incredible Hammond Brothers Construction planning retreat! This year, we had the unique privilege of meeting at the very property they envisioned and began building just two years ago. It’s a testament to their relentless pursuit of goals and their ability to turn dreams into reality.
The Hammonds are not only exceptional business leaders but also inspiring friends. Their commitment to their values and their dedication to making time for what truly matters is truly admirable. They've taught me so much about the importance of intentional planning, consistent reflection, and living by your word.
I'm honored to be part of this amazing team and look forward to many more years of growth and collaboration.

I’ve spent the last month collaborating with the management team at Eaton Cleveland, Tennessee to identify their strengths and areas for growth. Together, we delved into their purpose, provided constructive feedback, and created tailored development plans. It's not every day I get to work with a team that's so committed to their improvement.
I am also thrilled to support a company deeply rooted in my community. I enjoy traveling, but having only a 15-minute commute was awesome! Eaton Cleveland is a great example of how businesses can positively impact the people they lead if they’ll take the time to slow down.
A chance meeting with Karthik Iyer, MBA on a plane two months ago led to this awesome work. Has that ever happened to you when you travel and discover that the person next to you is incredibly interesting? Karthik is that kind of guy. Also, a special thanks to Angie Sewell, SPHR, SHRM-SCP for helping organize a great event.

Stuck in a rut? Here's why a break might be your best brainstorm!
Feeling creatively blocked? Don't force it! New research suggests relaxed mental states actually enhance creativity.
Here's the science: Our brains thrive on a balance between free-flowing ideas (think theta waves) and focused integration (gamma waves). This interplay happens in the default mode network (DMN) – that part of your brain that activates when you're daydreaming or taking a walk.
So, what does this mean for you? Take a break!
*Go for a walk in nature.
*Listen to some music (avoid lyrics for focused free-flow).
*Let your mind wander while doodling.
These simple activities can spark creativity by allowing your brain to loosen up and generate new connections.
Remember, losing focus isn't being unproductive – it's essential for creative thinking!

Every few years, I find myself drawn back to Parker Palmer’s Let Your Life Speak. It's a poetic exploration of vocation that continues to resonate deeply.
In my work with leaders and teams, I'm constantly reminded of the importance of tending to one's inner life. Our thoughts and identities shape everything from personal relationships to organizational culture.
As Palmer wisely said, “Go far enough on the inner journey... and you end up not lost in narcissism, but returning to the world, bearing more gracefully the responsibilities that come with being a human.”
For me, these responsibilities are simple: honest communication with kindness, directness, and a commitment to inspiring others to reach their full potential.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the interplay between inner life and leadership. What has been your experience?

This past week has been a challenging one. Our son Isaac underwent a lengthy facial reconstructive surgery, followed by a second procedure just two days later. This picture represents many hours spent in waiting rooms with time to think, wait, and be still.
While the road to recovery is still ahead, we are incredibly grateful for the exceptional care he has received at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. The entire team has been phenomenal, demonstrating unwavering compassion and professionalism.
Witnessing my wife’s strength and resilience during this difficult time has been truly inspiring. Her selfless dedication to our son has been a constant source of support.
As we navigate this journey, I’ve been reminded of the importance of cherishing the present moment. For those of us who are leaders, we can fall into the trap of overthinking the past or future when all we really have is the present moment. This is a valuable lesson that I will carry with me both personally and professionally.

Words are powerful, but actions speak louder.
Effective leadership isn't just about what you say, but how you say it. Your nonverbal cues can make or break a connection.
In my latest post, I explore the importance of non-verbal communication in building trust, creating rapport, and resolving conflict.

Folks who want to invest in their leaders regularly ask me what it looks like to develop a process to help their leaders grow. Honestly, it's kind of like detective work. You ask questions, you listen, and you look for themes. From there, you co-create a process or a program that makes sense for the context of each unique company.
If you are curious how this looks, check out this piece written by the CEO of a company we've partnered with for years now.
