How the interview process is much like the major gift solicitation process: Getting back into the interview process after many years has been both challenging and rewarding. What I've realized is that I can tap into the art of storytelling that is central to major gift fundraising, to help me zone in on what I truly want to do most. Just like learning about a potential donor and understanding what’s important to them, interviews have become a way for me to see if the job and I are a good fit, aligning my goals with those of the organization. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I’ve learned along the way. Every conversation has offered new insights, not just about the roles I’m pursuing but also about myself and the changing landscape of my profession. It’s been a great opportunity to reflect on how my journey has shaped who I am today. Most of all, I’m enjoying the process. Reengaging with interviewing has enforced my enthusiasm for major gift fundraising and the impact I want to make. Your post going viral doesn't equal you getting a job any faster than the next person. I feel like I still made little progress and was hoping to hear back about a job a lot sooner. I have been speaking with people daily and jobs have been getting sent my way that I've applied for but still no real progress, and a few rejection letters. I still have not received any offers. It's about to be mid-May and I was hoping to have landed something soon so I can pay rent next month. I don't want to be under this stress anymore. Here are a few things I have noticed through out the week. Things I have noticed: 1. Communication is everything - a lot of the people who initially reached out to me have also ghosted me. 2. Hiring isn't a priority to the recruiter cause they already have a job so your bills and things you are falling behind on don't matter. 3. My process at one job will most likely not match the process at the job I am interviewing for. So no matter what I will have to learn the way you do things and you can't determine if I am able to do that by asking me about my "Strategy" at another company. 4. It's nice when recruiters and hiring managers actually care and notice the small things. I believe someone truly wants the job and being passionate about their career should be a component of why they get it over just skills and experience. Get back into training employees instead of just throwing them in. Set them up for success. 5. Also, when screening a candidate please explain what the hiring manager is looking for or at least know so when you present the candidate to them they don't say, "Oh they don't have this experience and I am looking for this specific experience" meanwhile you never asked the candidate if they had that experience to know if they did have it or not so now they are disqualified." Friday thoughts: As I’m sitting here in sort of disbelief I’m back in this job market, I sit and think about an interview I recently had that gave me motivation. I interviewed with a COO who has been in his industry for 20 years at least and told me he’s envious of where I am. Now, as he said this *in my head* I’m like envious of my desperation and exhaustion? Then he explains how this is such an amazing time period for me because not only do I get to discover and rediscover myself and my career path I also get to choose where I end up. It’s not only about my experience I’ve gain over the years but my intentions on where I end up! This is my motivation because I have recently felt defeated. Then I remembered I am educated, smart, and have determination. Two tips to protect yourself from LinkedIn scams: 1. If you post on LinkedIn and immediately receive comments or DMs asking to connect, be cautious—they're likely scams. 2. To verify if someone reaching out is legitimate, especially if they have a profile picture (plus a very low # of connections) take a screenshot of the picture and upload it to the Google app. If scammers are using a photo from the internet, this is a quick way to check. If the image and name don’t match, here’s what to do: - Don’t respond. - Block and report the account. - If possible, notify the real person whose picture is being used. It might feel awkward, but I’m sure anyone would appreciate knowing their photo is being used in a scam targeting hard-working people.
