Sports teams are exploding in value. But how do you value them? Unlike other traditional assets where investors would primarily look at things such as: • Revenue • Market size • EBITDA • Reputation • Marketing costs With sports assets, you have to also tie in things such as: • Real estate • Cultural value • Athlete brand relevance • Fan engagement • Unique touchpoints and experiences Investing in a sports team is different than other assets. The scarcity nature and exclusivity of owning a sports team are driving more institutional capital to the space, but I think understanding how sports play a role in various communities and within culture is key. Last week, I had the privilege of leading a conversation on digital content innovation with three sports technology trailblazers: Christopher Benyarko (EVP of NBA DTC Tech and Ops), Charlie Ebersol (CEO of Infinite Athlete), and Jon Klein (Co-Founder & CEO of HANG Media). Thank you for your insightful perspectives. Below are a few highlights from our discussion. 1. Chris pointed out that the current media and tech transformation presents an opportunity to innovate. The NBA is using technology to meet fans where they are. The integrated nature of NBA ID membership enables a deep understanding of the fanbase. The knowledge about each fan’s preferences unlocks ultra personalization. This approach works well for the NBA who has a particularly global, young, and diverse fanbase to serve. 2. Charlie made a strong case for the idea of transformational innovation. He noted that “the electric light did not come from the continuous improvement of candles”. By providing developers access to sports rights owners’ IP, Infinite Athlete is looking to unlock innovations that we have not thought of. 3. Jon emphasized the importance of creating a culture where everybody contributes to developing the solutions. In a landscape of rapid change, he emphasized how important it is to lean on team members and listen to fans/users. Jon came up with the concept for HANG but his team and the user base continue to shape the product. New sports leagues are launching all the time now, and you simply have to stop and wonder how much more can the system take. Each new venture needs investors, sponsors, media distribution, talent pipelines, venues, and merchandise/apparel deals. This is a far from an exhaustive list of leagues, events, and international properties who are making a push for sports fans' attention in the U.S. I realize the argument for this expansion is grounded in the goal of serving niche audiences, customizing partnership platforms and activations, and delivering premium experiences -- but all that takes capital. We spend a lot of time cutting fan data to reach these audiences and help these properties and their sponsors achieve scale. It's a crowded world, and better fan data can help engage these niche (and not-so-niche) audiences. As a sports fan, I love seeing the creativity of these new formats.
