The Lost Arts of Football Development: A Journey Through Modernization As football has evolved, so too has player development. Advances in playing surfaces, technology, and coaching have transformed the sport, but some traditional aspects have been lost. This reflection on the “lost arts” reveals how icons like George Best and Bobby Charlton honed their skills under challenging conditions. 1. Mastering Uneven Playing Surfaces In George Best’s and Bobby Charlton’s era, natural grass pitches were often uneven and weather-beaten. Best’s dribbling and ball control were refined on boggy, unpredictable surfaces, requiring exceptional balance. Charlton’s precision in shooting and passing was developed through adapting to the erratic ball bounce, perfecting his technique to hit ‘50-pence’ passes even on difficult pitches. 2. The Art of First-Time Execution Both Best and Charlton mastered first-time passes and shots under less-than-ideal conditions. Best’s flair and creativity were honed through executing precise actions on surfaces where the ball might bobble. Charlton’s long-range shooting, similarly, was refined through relentless practice on varied pitches, showing how resilience and technique are intertwined. Harnessing the power of ***CONSTRUCTIVE EVALUATION*** in #sports? 🏆 . . 🔎 Evaluating yourself and your performance constructively is your opportunity for continuous improvement. How do you apply it in your development as an athlete? Constructive evaluation does not mean the athlete or coach ignore negative feedback, and only focus on positive feedback or vice versa. Constructive evaluation means an openness to all feedback and is applied in a constructive way, meaning the feedback is helpful, supportive, and informative. The intension is to help the athlete improve their performance, skills, or behaviour rather than simply criticizing or blaming them. Effective feedback requires structure and a framework of references. Feedback should take place on a regular basis (every week or 2 during training, and after every match or competition). The athlete and coach should have references such as training goals, competition goals, competitors’ performances, and medium to long term goals. Keep the process simple, with measurable goals and increments. Constructive evaluation in sports aims to foster continuous improvement, enhance performance, and contribute to the overall development and success of athletes.

Securing a trial at a professional football academy is hard enough. Young players need as much support and information as possible to enjoy the learning experience. Here's Part 1 (No.1-7) of a total 22 insights for trialists. 1/ Enjoy the learning process You might feel quite anxious and want to impress but remember that you have specific qualities which caught the attention of a scout for you to be offered a trial in the first place. Let that give you confidence. 2/ Be quick to listen, learn & apply These are three memorable steps to apply habitually when on trial. There will be challenges throughout your trial especially the new level of players you train with. Listen well and observe to see how you can develop a higher level of execution. 3/ Understanding Club Values & Philosophy Ask where you can see the values of the academy and the playing philosophy (usually you see some of this information on the walls). This is a great way to start taking in information about the club. 4/ Research the Academy Online In addition to football clips, search for videos of interviews which the Academy Manager has done for example and also look through the website. There's usually good information present to give you insight about the academy. 5/ Ask if there is an Academy Integration Coach This may be very unique to some clubs but these coaches are specifically in place to support trialists, by explaining the club philosophy and taking trialists for sessions prior to the main session. 6/ Performance Analysis and S&C Find out if you can sit in on performance analysis sessions and partake in strength & conditioning sessions. This will provide helpful insight and learning opportunities into other disciplines required and used to support the development of academy players. 7/ Notepad! Notepad! Notepad! Take a notepad with you to record what you do such as; sessions, information provided in performance analysis and S&C sessions, information the coaches give, and the players, coaches and staff names. In over a decade of academy coaching I have never seen a trialist bring their own notepad. Enhance your learning experience by taking notes to reflect on. Always Remeber. Learning from Sports – Feedback. Many of us, including me, look forward to Olympic games in Paris, France. I am lucky to be in France at the moment and had a good opportunity to listen to an Olympic coach in France. What intrigued me was how he develops and grows his athletes. The Olympic coach explained to me that athlete grow by coaching (70%), sharing (20%), training (10%). Did you notice that Athletes grow mainly by coaching? He further explained that he essence of coaching is ‘Feedback’ and ‘Debrief’. Business world can a lot from this. Expertise does not happen by doing more and more projects. It happens when appropriate FEEDBACK is exchanged between manager and individual, just as between a coach and an athlete. For this purpose, we need TIME OUT between projects. It seems to me that a lot more can be done in business world. Many of business leaders can grow their team and expertise by providing HONEST and CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK to our members. One more. The Olympic coach told me ‘A strong team is not built on soft conversation but is built on strong conversation’. Do you want to build a strong team?
