Quantum computers in 2023: how they work, what they do, and where they’re heading In June, an IBM computing executive claimed quantum computers were entering the “utility” phase, in which high-tech experimental devices become useful. In September, Australia’s Chief Scientist Cathy Foley went so far as to declare “the dawn of the quantum era”. This week, Australian physicist Michelle Simmons won the nation’s top science award for her work on developing silicon-based quantum computers. Obviously, quantum computers are having a moment. But – to step back a little – what exactly are they? https://lnkd.in/e3B2cwpu Amplitech Group, Inc. The future of secure data transmission is quantum 🔒 Secure quantum communications harness the properties of quantum mechanics to execute encryption protocols that are provably secure against adversaries. By exploiting the inherent randomness within quantum particles, cryptographic ‘keys’ can be distributed. This is referred to as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). However, a challenge with QKD is the lack of global standardization leading to incompatibility among systems using QKD. One of our quantum communication experts, Dr. Alfonso Tello Castillo published a study which proposes new ways to increase interoperability and performance of QKD systems. In a series of experiments, the research team successfully demonstrated a free-space QKD receiver with multi-protocol capabilities. Interoperability is valuable for platforms interfacing with multiple satellites and crucial for early global deployment systems 🛰 The study also introduces a novel polarization filtering technique, tailored for daytime QKD operations. As part of the RSA UK team, Dr. Tello Castillo is leveraging his expertise to develop the Quantum Lovelace Optical Augmentation Kit (QLOAK). QLOAK augments laser communication terminal (LaserCom) hardware to enable secure QKD and high-bandwidth LaserCom simultaneously, offering unparalleled levels of encryption and confidentiality for sensitive data transmission. Molecular One- and Two-Qubit Systems with Very Long Coherence Times General-purpose quantum computation and quantum simulation require multi-qubit architectures with precisely defined, robust interqubit interactions, coupled with local addressability. This is an unsolved challenge, primarily due to scalability issues. These issues often derive from poor control over interqubit interactions. https://buff.ly/46yLWmZ

Although effective now, current methods to ensure secure communication are under threat by emerging quantum computing technologies. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is another technology that will protect against this threat and revolutionise the way we secure our data. But what is QKD, how does it work, and why are we using satellites to demonstrate this technology? 🛰️🔒 We've published a new explainer video that explains all! 👉 https://lnkd.in/eDZ7FbXQ #QuantumShowcase23 | SpeQtral | STFC | STFC Business & Innovation | UK Research and Innovation | EPSRC | Innovate UK KTN | #QKD #quantumtechnology

15 Significant Ways Quantum Computing Could Soon Impact Society Many of us are awed by what technology can do today, but quantum computing is poised to make exponential changes to a multitude of functions across industries and entities, which could radically change how we live and work. Quantum computers are not only faster than most modern computers, but they can also carry out multiple calculations at once. This means that quantum computers could tackle problems that have simply been unsolvable before—and potentially introduce problems we’ve never encountered before. https://lnkd.in/e6HsmHwJ Amplitech Group, Inc. Not all 'quantum' is about computing. Some of our 2024 Photonics100 honourees, including Igor Meglinski, Ventsislav K. Valev, Niels Quack, and Dr. Michael Förtsch spoke to us during the Photonics100 judging process about their work in the wider quantum realm. #quantum #photonics #Photonics100 https://lnkd.in/dxwsRrKP
