There are too many football matches for elite players but owners and administrators want more of them to make more money. Something has to give, so the easy targets are domestic cup competitions. A fully negotiated settlement with all parties involved is the most equitable solution, but the Premier League and FA deal is a classic example of how ignoring other stakeholders can come back to bite you, given the backlash from lower league clubs (with some notable high profile omissions), organisations, fan groups and media. Regular season is over, weather has improved, we are all throwing a flat one on the barbecue whilst watching Euro 24. So it must be a quiet time in the world of football finance? Sadly that’s not the case, most clubs have a 30 June year end and many need to generate additional income to avoid breaching cost control limits in the Premier League. A few words with Inews on how a bit of mutually beneficial trading can dig clubs out of a financial hole.

In the pursuit of an exclusive model, they must confront a stark reality that history has repeatedly illuminated: arrogance, complacency, and a lust for control are the harbingers of long-term demise. At the heart of sporting success lie the principles of meritocracy and equality, pillars upon which the integrity of the sporting world is built. Yet, seemingly the allure of replicating the NFL model, with its aura of prestige in American sports, masks the inherent flaws when transplanted onto a global stage. The cautionary saga of U.S Soccer serves as a glaring testament to the dangers of isolation and exclusivity. By forsaking meritocracy and equality, U.S Soccer condemned itself to stagnation, consigning its fate to the periphery of the sporting realm. As deliberations unfold regarding the sport's trajectory, the FA Cup serves as a sobering reminder of the imperative to safeguard the values that have propelled it to unparalleled heights. To forsake these principles in would not only betray the very essence of the sport but also court the irreversible decline that history has so vehemently cautioned against.

It's the day we've all been waiting for: the release of the Football Governance Bill to establish the Independent Football Regulator. The Bill states that the Regulator's objectives will be: (a) to protect and promote the financial soundness of regulated clubs (“the club financial soundness objective”); (b) to protect and promote the financial resilience of English football (“the systemic financial resilience objective”); and (c) to safeguard the heritage of English football (“the heritage objective”). It will take some time to go through the Bill in detail. However, at a glance, there are certainly some promising aspects of the Bill. In particular, it is encouraging to see the presence of a dispute resolution procedure regarding the distribution of revenue in the football pyramid. That said, the devil is in the detail and I will be working through the Bill to consider if this mechanism is adequate. I note that there are a number of places in which reference is made to the commercial interests of football clubs, which is an important consideration but which must not be used to nullify the Regulator's powers to achieve its objectives.
