Globally, our cities are facing a climate crisis - they are presently, negative impact hotspots. A recent World Economic Forum report highlights a fact that can't be ignored - our urban areas are major contributors to global CO2 emissions and consume staggering amounts of the world’s energy. Our daily stat 🔢 underlines this impact: ⚡ Urban areas contribute 𝟳𝟬% of global CO2 emissions ⚡ Urban areas consume 𝟳𝟱% of the world’s energy. This number whilst alarmingly high, is set to get even higher primarily due to the rapid rise in urbanisation. This shouldn't really be a surprise especially as more than 66% of the world's population (around 6.5 billion people) currently live in cities. This concentration of people and human activity causes an immense strain of resources, demanding even more energy and intensifying the environmental footprint of our cities. ----------------------- IS THE ANSWER CLIMATETECH + NATURE? ------ With such a concentration of human activity, it is clear that if we want a climate-resilient future, then we must act to transform our cities into sustainable, thriving urban ecosystems. Could the answers lie in a combined ClimateTech + Nature approach? CLIMATETECH SOLUTIONS ------ ClimateTech investment is on the rise. From 2020-2021, investment sat at $56 billion, and the figure is rising. A lot of that investment is centred around the decarbonisation of the built environment. Coincidence? No. The research shows the vast potential in ClimateTech and Nature-based technology in significantly decarbonising cities. A report in the Nature Magazine suggests that greening just 35% of the EU's urban areas could reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 55.8 million tons annually. But where to start? There are so many great initiatives now in play: ✔️ Innovative building materials ✔️ Tackling embodied energy ✔️ Renewable energy generation at source ✔️ Reclaiming and reuse of materials ✔️ Construction for deconstruction ✔️ Green roofs, walls and urban spaces Here is our one to watch - DIY plug in solar balconies. They have captured the imagination in both Germany and Spain saving 30% on bills and costing 400-800 euros. NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS ------ Research shows that if just 20% of our existing buildings had green roofs we could absorb as much as 5.4% of global CO2 emissions. Green Riyadh is an initiative that is currently being built which has embedded this design ethos to lower temperatures, manage water and to provide cooler spaces for outdoor gatherings and activity. Integrating more nature-based solutions into cities will be increasingly important as our urban populations increase. Yes, our cities are negative impact hotspots BUT they really don't need to be.
