Individual freedoms are directly tied to mobility. There is no way around it. We can provide housing, but if residents can’t get from their housing to work, food, healthcare, social engagements, etc., then what do they have? We really have to adopt a ‘mobility-first’ mentality in development. #transitisessential
"We need to create the virtuous cycle where good public transit has a centralizing effect on where people invest in real estate and create new jobs. And because we've had decades of investment skewed towards roads and highways, that's sometimes a losing battle in these midsize cities." https://lnkd.in/e3sEy-G2

🚌 Embracing the Ride: How Public Transport Elevates City Life 🌆 This morning, as I enjoyed a smooth ride to work on the Washington DC Circulator bus, I reflected on the critical role public transportation plays in urban environments. Efficient, reliable public transit systems like the DC Circulator aren't just about mobility; they're about accessibility and opportunity for everyone. Whether it's a student heading to class, a professional en route to the office, or residents attending local events, public transportation provides an affordable, eco-friendly alternative to driving. It reduces traffic congestion, lowers emissions, and even helps in enhancing the local economy by increasing access to different neighborhoods. Moreover, public transit fosters community connections, bringing together people from all walks of life. It's more than a convenience; it's a lifeline that supports diverse needs and creates a more inclusive cityscape. Let's continue to support and advocate for the expansion and improvement of public transportation systems in our cities. It’s not just about getting from point A to B; it's about ensuring that everyone can participate fully in urban life. #PublicTransport #SustainableCities #UrbanMobility #WashingtonDC #Inclusion

Streamlining public transportation is crucial for sustainable cities. The rise of cars reshaped our cities, but we've learned they are antithetical to efficient urban life. https://lnkd.in/gG9AGRbg #sustainablecities #publictransportation #urbanliving #climatechange #cityplanning

Richmond, Virginia is one of the areas making innovative transportation choices to take Southerners farther — and often faster — than ever before, while curbing pollution. In 2018, the Richmond region completely revamped its existing bus routes and launched its first express bus — the Pulse. The Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) went fare-free during the pandemic, a model that continues today. With an expanded, more efficient, and fare-free system, combined with some transit-friendly land use changes, more people are choosing public transit and ridership rose another 14 percent in just the past year. Projects like the Pulse can help revitalize economically distressed neighborhoods and significantly expand the range of job opportunities for people by increasing where they can get to within a reasonable commute time. “What Richmond has done is a model that can be replicated in other places, and a reminder that transit can work well in the South,” -Trip Pollard, SELC’s Land and Community Program Leader Learn More: https://lnkd.in/eZqb28Zg
