Great post on success markers for alternative boards, prompting deeper questions on the purpose and point of such market segments in the context of access to finance and the necessary regulatory design considerations.
The SGX Catalist was launched on November 26, 2007, to replace the SESDAQ. The name “Catalist” is a blend of “Catalyst” and “List,” reflecting its purpose of acting as a catalyst for growth for fast-growing enterprises upon listing. To test whether the current Catalist companies are living up to the original purpose, I looked at the company's age (from the date of incorporation) and the listing age (from the date of listing). IF we consider under 10 years is "fast-growing", then we only have 26% to 45% of the total 207 Catalist companies that may have potential high growth, which is not very high. Should the KPI include the number of Catalist/ SESDAQ companies promoted to the Mainboard after their "fast-growth" period? In the past 33 years since the first promotee was promoted and is still on the Mainboard, 76 out of the current 466 SGX Mainboard companies were promoted from the junior boards of SGX SESDAQ or Catalist. Only 6 from the past five years, with peaks more than a decade ago during 2007-09, with 24 companies or almost one-third of the total promotees. It seems like there is a downward trend of junior board companies getting the right business growth and corporate governance to be promoted to the Mainboard. What do you think?
