We’re delighted to share that our proposals for the next phase of PBSA at Nottingham’s The Island Quarter have been approved by Nottingham City Council’s planning committee! 🎉 In collaboration with The Conygar Investment Company, DAY has designed a scheme featuring 394 student spaces across four interconnected blocks. The development will feature premium amenities including a gym, lounges, and social areas. The plans also include commitments to sustainability and community enhancement, such as leveraging Nottingham’s district heating network, contributing to affordable housing, and enhancing the shared spaces. These efforts align with Nottingham’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2028, making this development an integral part of the city’s green future. 🌿 A huge thank you to our team and collaborators for their hard work in making this a reality. https://lnkd.in/efvSG_Vc Nottingham Trent University | University of Nottingham #DAYTEAM #DAYArchitectural #Architecture #DAYResidential #PlanningApproval #PBSA #Nottingham

"The really impressive thing is that they saved a year of time and an estimated 25% of the cost." Below, Bill McKay discusses the remarkable transformation of The University of Auckland's B201 Building into one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most sustainable developments on RNZ. Adaptive reuse and low carbon design strategies have led to the project receiving 6 Green Stars for Design and the most points awarded to any building from the NZGBC to date, categorising it as ‘world-leading’. The project’s success serves as a testament to the benefit of re-evaluating the latent value and design potential in existing buildings that may once have been deemed no longer fit for purpose. Conserving these buildings and putting them to new uses can provide a head start when futureproofing investments, making property portfolios more resilient whilst continuing to generate great returns. https://lnkd.in/gP-i8sPE

We’re thrilled to be hosting Unlocking Nottingham: From Potential to Permission—a dynamic panel event designed to explore the exciting opportunities shaping Nottingham’s future! Join us on Thursday 23 January from 17:30 - 20:00, as Jenny Keen MRTPI, Sarah MacPherson MRTPI, Hannah Hamilton-Rutter and guest speakers Victoria Green and Paul Seddon discuss what landowners, developers, and their advisors, can do to take advantage of existing properties and land from small-scale conversions, adding additional storeys, to a complete redevelopment from the ground up. We will challenge the narrative that brownfield sites, conversions, and particularly historic buildings are ‘too hard’ or ‘too expensive’ to add commercial value to your portfolio. Following the development timeline from inception to delivery, we will cover the following key areas: - Demystifying design and heritage issues and opportunities - Making the most out of pre-application engagement - How the changing national and local plan context and legislation changes impact development in Nottingham Whether you're in development, design, or simply passionate about Nottingham’s future, this is your chance to be part of the conversation. https://lnkd.in/e-kYd6BE Nicki Edwards #UnlockingNottingham #UrbanGrowth #MarronsArchitecture #CityPlanning #SustainableDevelopment

This morning, Rachel Legood had the pleasure of attending the opening of the impressive new Construction Centre at Oaklands College, St Albans Campus in conjunction with the college and R G Carter. The event showcased not only the cutting-edge facilities but also the exciting future for vocational education in our region. From the ribbon cutting by Daisy Cooper MP to inspiring talks by industry leaders including Richard Tavener (Herts & Beds Constructing Excellence Club & RDT Architects) and Neil Lock (Morgan Sindall Construction), it was clear this centre will play a vital role in serving regional employers. The highlights? ✔️ Aiming for 'Excellent' BREEAM standards, the centre is a sustainability trailblazer, featuring solar panels, air source heat pumps, and fully recycled bricks - the first project in England to do so! ✔️ A transformative workspace designed with sustainability at its heart, including sustainable furniture by JPA Workspaces. ✔️ Innovative tech like real-time energy usage displays to engage and educate students. As Hertfordshire Building Control, we’re thrilled to see such forward-thinking projects coming to fruition. The centre demonstrates how strategic collaboration across Hertfordshire can deliver facilities that empower students and meet local employers' needs. A huge congratulations to Oaklands College and R G Carter for creating a space that sets the benchmark for sustainable construction education! 👏 #ConstructionEducation #Sustainability #BREEAM #VocationalTraining #BuildingForTheFuture #TLevels

Leah Lang, the Queensland State Government Architect, is leading the government's MMC program for housing. Her team is making some good headway with modular as a method of MMC, particularly to support social housing, key worker accomodation and emergency response. It was fantastic to have Leah join our community practice on Housing Diversity today, hosted at Urbis. The practice includes all the peak and industry bodies across the entire housing system. We discussed where the modular program is heading in the short term, including the Queensland Government’s recent announcement to procure up to 600 modular homes by the end of this year, and where the program and industry might be heading in the longer term as well. While there are some differing views on what more we could be doing in the wider MMC space, and how much of it, we all agree that the program needs to be ambitious and play a key role in our future housing supply pipeline. Leah's energy and enthusiasm for this agenda is inspiring. Thank you for taking the time to join us and for making yourself available to industry. We greatly appreciate it. It’s my understanding that the government will look to go back out to industry for a further EOI opportunity to be involved in the program later this year, and that’s critical to get more industry involvement. Looking forward to joining the prefabAUS conference in Sydney later this month to look at the industry roadmap and what else is happening nationally and overseas that should be considered 🏡 🙌 #ModernMethods #Modular #PreFabricated #Industrialised #SmartBuilding #Innovation #Investment #IndustryDevelopment #Queensland #AdvancedManufacturing #Australia 📣Shout out to our Housing Diversity CoP members: Q Shelter Property Council of Australia Queensland Australian Institute of Architects Strata Community Association (Qld) CHIA Queensland Council of Mayors (SEQ) Local Government Association of Queensland Articulous Communications YIMBY Qld Planning Institute of Australia Urbis Master Builders Queensland Studio THI
