Unfortunately, nearly 225,000 #BlackandLatinoStudents are missing out on #APCoursesthey should otherwise have access to while in high school. @edtrust teamed up with @equaloppschools to look specifically at access to #APSTEMcourses. They analyzed student survey data, administrative school files, school course enrollment, and interviewed 10 school leaders and educators across six districts. They found that Black and Latino students and students from low-income backgrounds are being denied access to AP STEM opportunities such as #APBiology, AP Physics, and AP Chemistry, despite voicing interest in going to college and pursuing a career in a #STEMfield. In fact, the analysis shows that for many Black and Latino students, STEM courses are their favorite subject areas. 2 in 5 Black & Latino #students say #STEM courses are their favorite. But only 3% are enrolled in #APStem. Why are they being shut out? Thoughts? 🤔

STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through STEM, students develop key skills including problem-solving and creativity. Our young Mayoorians of Nursery class embarked on an exciting STEM adventure by constructing their own bridges using plastic cups and rubber bands. This hands-on activity aimed to introduce our young learners to basic engineering principles in a fun and engaging way. The bridge-building activity was not only educational but also incredibly enjoyable for the children. They eagerly experimented with different designs, learning through trial and error about the importance of balance and stability. The project also fostered teamwork, as students collaborated to solve problems and refine their structures. Our young engineers did a fantastic job and learned valuable lessons about construction, stability, and cooperation. In honor of National STEM Day – we’d like to share some science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities and resources. Perhaps you know a young person that could benefit from a learning more about STEM through interactive projects. Or perhaps you want a new activity to do with your child or teen to encourage their problem-solving skills. CV Technology relies on sound engineering every day to create explosion protection solutions that provide safety in processing plants handling combustible materials. Many of our in-house engineers were interested in STEM subjects from a young age and chose to pursue their career in engineering because of early inspirations and role models that encouraged their interests. The next generation of students will fill an increasing need for STEM-oriented professionals, so finding ways to engage in these activities at all ages and abilities is a great way to inspire students to pursue careers in engineering, computer science, math, and other related fields. When we focus too much on how STEM prepares students for the workforce, we miss the other potential benefits of STEM education. In her book, STEM by Design, Anne Jolly articulates several ways in which STEM education cultivates meta-skills that are valuable for life as well as a career: 1. STEM lessons help students go deeper in their understanding of important science and math concepts. 2. Students become innovative critical thinkers and are able to make good decisions. 3. Students understand how to approach and solve problems. 4. Students develop a sense of ethics and social conscience. 5. Students develop good collaboration skills. 6.
