Overcoming a Congenital Heart Condition: Dayenne Zwaagman's Inspiring Journey Born with an underdeveloped right ventricle due to a rare congenital heart condition, Dayenne Zwaagman, Patient Representative, shared her heartfelt story of resilience and determination during #VBHCPrize2023 As a newborn, she underwent multiple heart surgeries within weeks. Despite surgeons giving up on her, she defied the odds and survived. "My illness has been my life […], but besides the struggle I have learned to have fun with it," Dayenne reflects. Dayenne also shared her journey in the academic world, highlighting her cardiac rehabilitation program. Finding it insufficiently challenging, she advocated for a personalized program, emphasizing the importance of having a say in her own therapy. Although some healthcare professionals initially found it odd that she sat at the table alongside cardiac surgeons and other providers, having a voice in her therapy, Dayenne and her team found it refreshing and empowering. 📹 Dayenne’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of patient-centered care.
