International Sales & Market Development B2B - Market positioning - Research of first customers - International Trade Shows & Fairs
Deere & Co said on Wednesday it would cut an unspecified number of production and salaried jobs to save costs as it grapples with a downturn in farm equipment demand. The cuts will reduce "overlap and redundancy in roles and responsibilities", Deere disclosed in a filing, following media reports from the past week about layoffs. The news comes weeks after the company trimmed its annual profit forecast for the second time and projected steeper declines in sales of large agriculture equipment. Lower crop prices are leaving agriculture equipment sellers with an excess of unsold tractors and combines, leading some to offer discounts and suspend new orders. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has also forecast farm income would slide 25.5% to $116.1 billion this year from 2023. #USA #JohnDeere #will #cut #jobs #following #expected #decline #crop #prices #leaving #equipment #sellers #with #excess #of #unsold #tractors

I love origin stories. Seven things I recently learned or forgot I knew about the John Deere equipment company and a wrench with a story: 1) The company's founder was actually named John Deere. He was born in 1804 in Vermont. His father was lost at sea and he and six siblings were raised by his mother. He became a well-known blacksmith. The New England economy collapsed in 1836. Facing unhappy creditors and a threat of debtors prison, he moved to Grand Detour, Illinois. 2) Deere set up a blacksmith shop. He spent a lot of time repairing cast iron plows that weren't well suited to the sticky clay local soil. He experimented extensively and developed a steel plow. The steel plow cut through soil, lifted it up, and turned it over - all without clay sticking to the plow. It made plowing much more effective and efficient. 3) He sold his first plow in 1838. He continued to refine and sold more and more. Deere and a partner split when Deere wanted to sell beyond Grand Detour but there wasn't transportation infrastructure available. 4) Deere moved to Moline, Illinois and resumed manufacturing steel plows. He was very successful and soon selling thousands of plows. In 1858, Deere's son Charles took over day-to-day operations. Deere operated for decades before the internal combustion engine was invented. John Deere died in 1886 - long before there was such a thing as a John Deere tractor. 5) In 1912, the conservative company considered expanding into tractors. A board member, Joseph Dain, was tasked with developing and building a prototype. He did and it was successful enough to make and sell 100 units in 1917 and 1918, mostly in the Dakotas. 6) In 1918, Deere bought the Waterloo Gasoline Tractor Company and its Waterloo Boy tractor which was much cheaper. That was the end of the Dain tractor. Apparently, Deere repurchased almost all, had them destroyed, and didn’t really acknowledge the Dain. Only two remain. 7) A wrench was delivered with each tractor (part number TR590). Only a handful are known to survive and they are highly prized by collectors. One was sold at auction in 2017 for $16,500. Other sales have brought big money, so that wasn’t an aberration. Collectors aren’t just looking for wrenches: A rusty toolbox that was mounted on the tractor was sold at auction in 2018 for $10,000.
