#wouldyourather flip burgers or build EVs? What an interesting time in manufacturing when workers *get to* decide if they want to work at McDonald's or assembly plants. Mike Nager hit the nail on the head when he said in a recent post, "The next manufacturing worker will be found at Trader Joe's, Buc-ee's, or an Amazon warehouse". At $20/hr, the world is your oyster, apparently. https://lnkd.in/gz5-5A_2 #manufacturing #supplychain

Distributors: union risks for bigger, automated warehouses. 1. This article doesn’t detail the $55MM++ cost of Kroger’s “sheds”. a. This article does: https://lnkd.in/gRBwxVna b. Unions love to hold hostage, big, fixed automation serving scads of customers c. Walmart pays their drivers between the DCs and stores the highest in the land. Otherwise, if unionized, a union could shut down a DC and 150 stores. 2. Key question: how do you both automate and populate DCs with high-paying, retained, X-trained, engaged, and non-union employees like Costco does? Ans: get a copy of the book: “The Case for Good Jobs” by Ton (Read my review at Amazon) 3. BTW, Kroger and Albertson want to merge to try to survive. With too many unions and debt, they are high-cost, high-prices in contrast to Walmart, Aldi, Lidl, and Trader Joe’s.

Challenging update for the e-commerce sector! A recent court ruling in Utrecht has major implications for companies like Picnic Technologies, Flink and Getir. Despite their mobile nature, they are now covered by the food industry collective bargaining agreement, not the e-commerce one. This decision will make the journey towards profitability more challenging, as it entails higher labor costs for grocery delivery workers. Brace yourselves for potential price hikes as companies may pass on these increased costs to customers. #Ecommerce #LaborRegulations #BusinessChallenges #profitability #operations

Exploring GLOBAL EMPLOYMENT LAW systems reveals fascinating regional characteristics that every HR professional should be aware of. Here’s a snapshot of what you need to know about Western European countries (I particularly loved the "Flexicurity" concept): 🇪🇺 Western European Employment Law Systems: ▶ Civil Law-Based Systems: Apart from the UK, which follows common law, most Western European countries have civil law systems modeled after the French code of civil law. ▶ Strong Employee Rights: Extensive restrictions make processes like employee termination more complex compared to countries like the United States. ▶ Strong Collective Rights: Robust unions and broad-reaching collective bargaining agreements are common, often requiring employers to adhere to industry-wide agreements. ▶ Works Councils: These councils represent workers and have rights to consult on HR decisions, making consultation a crucial part of HR management in these countries. Country Highlights: 🇩🇪 Germany: ☑ Strong Unions and Collective Rights: Germany is the origin of works councils and has powerful collective bargaining agreements across major industries. ☑ Consultation Requirements: HR decisions require consultation with works councils, making the process more collaborative but also more complex. ❗ Walmart's exit from Germany highlights the challenges international companies can face in adapting to these systems. (Learn More: https://lnkd.in/diUzeWGy.) 🇫🇷 France: ☑ Detailed Labor Code: France’s extensive labor code sets out strict procedures for HR decisions, especially regarding terminations. ☑ Reforms: Recent reforms aim to introduce more flexibility, but the system remains relatively restrictive for employers. ⚓ Scandinavia: ☑ Flexicurity: An interesting blend of flexibility and security, this model provides strong safety nets for employees while allowing more leeway in HR decisions, particularly around terminations. (Learn More: https://lnkd.in/d3eQGKw2.) ☑ Active Labor Market Policies: Support employees in finding new jobs, contributing to a balanced approach in employment law. Navigating the complexities of Western European employment laws can be challenging, but being aware of these regional characteristics helps in developing compliant and effective HR strategies. #GlobalHR #EmploymentLaw #WesternEurope #HRCompliance #Flexicurity #CollectiveBargaining #WorksCouncils

When companies are forced to raise their wages, they must choose who will pay for it: A) Company pays for it - No change - lower profit, likely reduced shareholder value leading to execs risking their jobs. B) Employees pay for it - Layoffs - many employees lose their jobs, quality of service suffers, customer complaints. C) Customers pay for it - Price increases - likely lower sales volume leading to lower revenue for suppliers and those ancillary effects such as inflation throughout the supply chain, customer complaints over higher prices. Execs will RARELY EVER choose Option A. Unfortunately though, these policy changes are sold based on the ignorance that ALL will choose Option A.

TACKLING THE CHALLENGES OF LABOR SHORTAGE IN CORRUGATED MANUFACTURING The corrugated manufacturing industry has been hit hard by labor shortages in recent years. Despite the high demand for corrugated packaging products, many companies are struggling to find enough skilled workers to keep up with production. This has led to increased costs, longer lead times, and lower overall productivity for many businesses in the industry. One option is to invest in automation and other technologies that can help streamline production processes and reduce the need for manual labor. It’s the exit for Goodyear Malaysia in June. Such news is best not to take it nonchalantly. I don’t profess I know economics of the country well , but I believe I am qualified to have a say in anything about malls. Most likely reason is probably the bottom line that doesn’t give meaningful raison d’etre to exist. If the situation is likened to a mall, it is likened to closure of a shop. Mall management should endeavour to keep attribution rate as low as possible. Each closure of shop might cost rent income opportunity loss due to downtown. Replacement of shop might come with extra cost, eg to agent, more provision, capex contribution etc. Nowadays, with stiff competition out there of too many retail space chasing too few retailers, it is never easy to get the right replacement and the desired terms. It’s tough out there. Relationship between mall tenant and landlord has changed. Landlord-tenant relationship of the old days is already outdated and no longer add to competitive edge. Partner relationship is the norm, especially with increasing tenancy agreements with GTO term. A good tenant is always worth retaining, although they are many other reasons to exit. Mall management today proactively engage shops with declining or poor sales performance. The management will commit its marketing and promotion tool to enable better brand awareness and increase in sales performance. For the mall to thrive, shops must thrive first. When they do, opportunity for higher reversion rate increases too. Then both prosper mutually. Don’t treat attrition nonchalantly.
