I recently read here about what a challenging year 2024 has been for so many of us, myself included. It’s been a year of big ups and downs—sudden client acquisitions, postponed projects, the usual turbulence that comes with growth, and personal challenges like family health concerns and some real-life “dramas.” Despite a lot being out of my hands, I’ve chosen to focus on what I can control. And with everything going on—from global unrest to the endless drumbeat of economic uncertainty—keeping a positive focus hasn’t always been easy. What’s helped me keep moving forward is the people I’ve been lucky to have around me: family, my team, and clients who share the same values and drive. They’re the reason I can lean into the positive, especially in times when that’s a bit of a challenge. As the classic song “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive” by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer reminds us: “You’ve got to accentuate the positive, Eliminate the negative, Latch on to the affirmative, Don’t mess with Mister In-Between.” So, with that spirit, here are some of my highlights from 2024, both personal and professional: 👉 My daughter got engaged 😊 👉 We redeveloped a major client’s Gift Card platform using the latest MS tech stack 👉 My mother-in-law had successful heart surgery 👉 Our team is transitioning fully from Virtual Machines to the Cloud 👉 We launched the inaugural Highworth Jazz Festival—successfully! 👉 Our Indonesian team grew, with our first female developer joining us 👉 Launched 3 new Gift Card eCommerce platforms 👉 Enjoyed 3 incredible holidays! 👉 Watched my children come into their own, both personally and professionally 👉 Saw the release of a Big Band album on vinyl, which I was thrilled to produce 👉 Continued our business transformation journey with DevOps rollout 👉 Secured new revenue streams into 2025 👉 Reached the finalist stage for 3 business awards on our first attempt 👉 Witnessed the unparalleled loyalty of family, friends, and colleagues Writing this, I can see that focusing on the positives truly brings out more. There are likely even more wins than I’ve shared here, but I’ll leave it at this. I think you get the idea! Keep smiling, everyone.

There’s one more month left of 2024 - let’s make it count. There’s a narrative around December that it’s a ‘write off month’ - that all good habits and goals go out the window, making space for indulgences. Now, I’ll be the first to admit, this is always partly true, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t value in the last 31 days of the year. From reflections on what’s been achieved and learned, to forward planning and goal setting for the year ahead, there’s a lot to consider. Over the past 15 years, I’ve found Thanksgiving to be a good place to start. Taking a few days to pause, look around and take note of everything you have to be grateful for is an incredibly effective exercise - almost like conducting a SWOT at the start of an audit! From here, we can then look forward, taking strengths and opportunities to what we want to achieve next. As I begin this process myself, I find that we’re ending 2024 in a very strong position. At @JLL, we’ve massively developed our services and capabilities this year, putting us at the forefront of technology, sustainability and real estate more broadly. I’m both proud of the work that’s been done and optimistic for what comes next. I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving weekend - I hope any reflections set you up for a strong end to the year.
